A new piece of online art offers a glimpse of what The Boys could look like as a video game. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys takes place in a world in which superheroes exist, but are secretly corrupt and abuse their powers on a regular basis. The Amazon series, which premiered its first season on the streaming service last year, focuses on the conflict between a group of evil superheroes and the vigilantes determined to bring them to justice. Offering a refreshingly cynical, satirical take on the traditional superhero genre, The Boys has been a smash hit for Amazon ever since it made its debut.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In addition to its central subversive premise, The Boys has found endlessly interesting ways to separate itself from the many other live-action comic book shows and films being released nowadays. Its visual style is unlike any other show on TV right now, and the series has embraced a no-holds-barred approach to violence and gore that most comic book adaptations have been unwilling to adopt. As a result, The Boys has been able to believably create its fictional world onscreen, and has garnered its fair share of high-profile fans in the time since its premiere.

Among its fans is God of War art director, Raf Grassetti, who celebrated last week’s season 2 premiere of The Boys with a custom piece of art for the series. The unique piece imagines what the show’s big bad, a Superman-esque being known as Homelander (played by Antony Starr), might look like in a video game. Check out the art down below:

Looking at the artwork, it’s hard not to imagine what a full video game adaptation of The Boys would look and feel like. As a property, The Boys boasts a wide cast of characters, each with different powers and personalities. That means a Boys video game has the potential for a more varied gameplay experience than most superhero games. Hypothetically, not only could a Boys video game include the same kind of super-powered missions that are typical of superhero games, but it could also switch (like the Amazon series does) between the perspectives of the super-powered characters themselves and the vigilantes trying to take them down. In other words, the gameplay and narrative possibilities in this case, seem endless.

Now, there has been no word up until this point of a video game being made for The Boys, which makes the possibility of a video game adaptation seem slim. But the series does continue to be a massive success for Amazon, with The Boys season 2 receiving positive reviews from most critics and fans of the show already digging into the season’s first batch of episodes. Coming off the recent Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League video game announcements from DC FanDome too, discussions have once again been running wild online about what other superhero properties could (and should) get their own video game adaptations. At the very least, this artwork proves that The Boys certainly deserves to be on that list.
