What’s the status on the Honey, I Shrunk The Kids remake? The late Stuart Gordon is a horror icon and is best known for his gory adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft tales like Re-Animator, From Beyond and Dagon. He also directed Christopher Lambert sci-fi action movie Fortress and “The Black Cat” episode of Masters Of Horror, which is considered one of that show’s best episodes. Gordon was also attached to early versions of both American Psycho, which was set to star Johnny Depp, and Iron Man.

A lesser-known fact about Stuart Gordon is that he and Re-Animator producer Brian Yuzna came up with the original story for Honey, I Shrunk The Kids. Their original version was dubbed Teeny Weenies, which Gordon was set to direct before dropping out and being replaced with Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger). The story revolves around a group of kids who are accidentally shrunk down by a machine invented by their scientist father Wayne Szalinski (Rick Moranis, Ghostbusters). They then have to navigate their backyard – which is suddenly a lot more dangerous now they’re only a quarter of an inch tall.

Honey, I Shrunk The Kids was a surprise hit, spawning two sequels of varying quality and a live-action TV show. There has been rumblings of a remake or reboot for some time now, so what is the status of the new movie?

The New Honey, I Shrunk The Kids Movie Is Titled Shrunk

The Honey, I Shrunk The Kids remake will be a legacy-quel titled Shrunk and will focus on Wayne Szalinski’s grown son Nick, who has followed in his father’s footsteps and become a scientist. This becomes quite literal when he ends up shrinking his own children too and has to find a way to reverse his mistake.

Shrunk Will Feature The Return Of Rick Moranis

Rick Moranis’ last live-action role was 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, with the actor then taking an extended break to raise his children. He previously turned down offers to return for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but in February 2020 it was confirmed that he’d return for Shrunk. Honey, I Shrunk The Kids director Joe Johnston is also returning behind the camera, while Josh Gad will play Nick Szalinski.

Shrunk Doesn’t Currently Have A Release Date

While a Honey, I Shrunk The Kids remake was originally reported to be a Disney+ exclusive, it was later confirmed Shrunk will have a theatrical run. There’s currently no release date set for the film, however, but it’s unlikely to arrive any sooner than 2022.
