A new SpongeBob-themed racing season for Hot Wheels Unleashed has brought SpongeBob, Patrick, and other under-the-sea friends to Milestone’s racing game. Based on Mattel’s die-cast model car brand, Hot Wheels Unleashed was released on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC in September 2021, and is the franchise’s newest installment since 2013. With a robust collection of Hot Wheels cars to collect – and many more added through DLC – Hot Wheels Unleashed tasks players with completing challenges to unlock a variety of vehicles from giant ducks to the Batmobile.

Unlocking cars can be done in a variety of ways, with the most obvious being through Blind Boxes, Hot Wheels Unleashed’s version of loot boxes. Vehicles from Blind Boxes can be dismantled, sold for Gears and Coins, or added to a player’s collection. Vehicles can also be purchased, though some vehicles like the Legendary Batmobile can be worth far more than the 500 coins for a Blind Box. Since launch, Milestone has added to its over 60-car roster, having introduced the Batmobile, Armored Batman, The Penguin, Robin 2.0T, and The Joker GT in the DC content pack for Hot Wheels Unleashed.

A trailer posted by the Milestone Team YouTube channel unveiled the SpongeBob Racing Season for Hot Wheels Unleashed, which brings SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star, and many others from under the sea into the Hot Wheels racing game. Having dropped on January 20, the premium racing season DLC pack introduces unique vehicles for SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Plankton, Sandy Cheeks, and Mr. Krabs, most of which are available through purchase. The season also adds new challenges to complete and a brand new SpongeBob-themed track to complete them on. Also available are new themed customization items for the Basement and the Player Profile, as well as gears and coins for players who jump into the action. The event runs from January 20 to March 29 on all platforms.

The Hot Wheels Unleashed content roadmap promised many crossovers, including ones with Street Fighter and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Other DLC included a variety of real-life car companies like Aston Martian, Corvette, and BMW, all with additional content being made available through three DLC passes. Milestone has also provided new content through full-length seasons, such as the recently-ended Super-Villains Racing Season, which lasted from November 11 to January 18. The season brought infamous DC villains like Bane, Poison Ivy, and Deathstroke, as well as DC-themed item customizations. The SpongeBob-themed season offers similar add-ons, such as new cars and themed challenges, all related to Nickelodeon’s animated series.

Though Hot Wheels Unleashed was panned by some reviewers, Milestone continues to support its racing game with new themed content. This is very similar to Mattel’s Hot Wheels toy brand, which consistently adds new vehicle models from both pop-culture and real-world brands. The SpongeBob Racing Season is another massive crossover for Hot Wheels Unleashed and it may leave fans wondering what the next big one might be.

Hot Wheels Unleashed is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
