Ridley Scott’s latest movie House of Gucci proves that Lady Gaga is a true movie star. Gaga stars in the film as Patrizia Reggiani, the wife of Maurizio Gucci, played by Adam Driver. Reggiani is famously known for her relationship with Gucci, both the company and the man, and for her eventual conviction of hiring someone to murder Gucci after their marriage goes south. While critics’ reviews for House of Gucci aren’t in yet, early reactions on social media praised Gaga for her full-tilt commitment to the role of Patrizia, a commitment that could earn Gaga her second Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Gaga was previously nominated for her first starring role as Ally Maine opposite Bradley Cooper’s Jackson Maine in the 2018 remake A Star Is Born. Gaga’s Ally was an up-and-coming singer who falls in love with Cooper’s seasoned country singer and their fateful romance sets her on a path to stardom similar to her own rise as a pop star. While Gaga didn’t win the Best Actress trophy that year (it went to Olivia Colman for The Father), she did pick up a trophy for Best Original Song for “Shallow.” Still, at this point, Gaga seems a shoo-in for a Best Actress win at some point in her career.

Scott’s House of Gucci shows that Gaga is a true movie star, one who can compete with the best of them. In a cast full of standouts, including Jeremy Irons, Al Pacino, Salma Hayek, and Jared Leto, who also wholly commits to the character of Paolo Gucci, Gaga is arguably the standout. It’s hard to do in a cast full of veterans, but the actress pulls it off. Considering the fact that Gaga’s public persona is as bombastic as her music, it’s a feat in and of itself that she can disappear into the role of Patrizia and make audiences forget about the pop star behind her Italian persona.

Gaga was able to do the same thing in A Star Is Born, which is an even greater feat than her role as Patrizia. The character of Ally Maine is reminiscent of Gaga herself – from her start as a singer-songwriter to her meteoric rise as a global pop star, Ally’s career and the songs on A Star Is Born‘s soundtrack closely mimic that of Gaga’s and the fact that the actress was able to separate herself from the role and create a wholly unique character proves that her time at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts was well worth it.

Now, where Gaga goes next will determine her future as a movie star. If she wins the Best Actress Oscar for House of Gucci, she’ll join the likes of Cher and Barbra Streisand as singers-turned-actresses who proved they are just as good on stage as they are on the big screen. Gaga faces tough competition, though, especially from Kristen Stewart, who is likely the be nominated for Spencer and is another actress who is long overdue for some awards recognition stateside. Regardless of whether or not Gaga wins for House of Gucci, though, it’s clear that she has a bright future ahead of her as a movie star and all eyes will be on what she chooses as her next role.
