Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born was a hit among critics and viewers, who praised the performances of the main cast, the direction, and the soundtrack – and for those who loved the songs, there’s an encore cut with extended performances and more. A Star Is Born is Cooper’s directorial debut and the third remake of the original 1937 film. It follows hard-drinking country-rock singer Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) who discovers a young singer and songwriter, Ally (Lady Gaga), and falls in love with her.

Cooper and Gaga’s chemistry not only showed in their on-screen performances but also on the film’s soundtrack. Both actors wrote some of the songs with the help of some big names in the music industry, such as Lukas Nelson and Mark Ronson, and delivered truly powerful musical performances both in the film and outside, like they did at the 91st Academy Awards. In February 2019, an encore cut of A Star Is Born was released in theaters, giving viewers an extended musical experience.

This encore version has 12 minutes of footage that wasn’t included in the first cut of the film, with extended performances of some of the film’s biggest songs and scenes that were originally left on the cutting room floor.

Extended Performances

A Star Is Born’s encore cut includes extended performances of “Black Eyes”, “Alibi”, and Lady Gaga’s impromptu a capella performance of “Shallow”. “Black Eyes”, written by Bradley Cooper and Lukas Nelson, is the opening number of the film, performed by Jackson Maine and his band. “Alibi”, written by Gaga, Cooper, and Nelson, is the song that plays when Ally and Ramon (Anthony Ramos) arrive at Jackson’s concert. Ally’s a capella version of “Shallow” is what makes Jackson realize the extent of her talent as both singer and songwriter, while they’re sitting outside a convenience store. “Shallow” is also the song that gave Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt the Oscar for Best Original Song.

New Scenes

The new scenes in this version are Ally’s performance of “Is That Alright”, Jackson’s studio version of “Too Far Gone”, and Jack and Ally working on a new song titled “Clover”. In the original cut, “Is That Alright” plays during Jack and Ally’s wedding, but in the encore cut fans can enjoy the song as performed by Ally to Jackson at their wedding party. “Too Far Gone” is a song performed by Jackson in his studio, and “Clover” is written by Ally and Jackson during a rehearsal while on tour. “Is That Alright” and “Too Far Gone” are included in the A Star Is Born soundtrack, but “Clover” isn’t, as the scene (and therefore the song, at least the on-screen version) is only 42 seconds long.

The encore version of A Star Is Born was released after the theatrical cut was out on home media, but that doesn’t mean fans didn’t pay to see it and even asked for it to be released on DVD and Blu-Ray. Luckily, the encore cut was released on home media a few months later, and those who already had the first cut on iTunes and Vudu were able to enjoy it as an “extra”, so nobody was left out from enjoying the extra content.
