Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) will return in an upcoming WandaVision spinoff on Disney+, but given her status, how will she return to the MCU? Part of the appeal of WandaVision was its cryptic story, featuring Wanda Maximoff, still suffering in the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, living in a sitcom-themed world with a seemingly resurrected Vision. When her nosey neighbor, “Agnes,” is revealed to be the classic Marvel comics villain Agatha Harkness, Hahn’s already-entertaining performance became even more fun, mixing comedy and menace seamlessly. This makes Hahn’s return to the role unsurprising, but there are several possible ways that this can happen.

Agatha Harkness is a witch who’s over 300 years old, having lived during the Salem witch trials. After betraying and killing her coven through the use of dark magic, Harkness eventually sought out Wanda, hoping to absorb her legendary Chaos Magic. Under the guise of “Agnes,” Agatha sowed confusion in Wanda and her recreation of Vision, eventually revealing her true identity towards the end of WandaVision.

After Wanda defeats and absorbs Agatha’s magic, reaching her full potential and becoming the Scarlet Witch, she imprisons Harkness in Westview, New Jersey. Wanda entrances Agatha into believing herself to be Agnes, trapping her in a harmless state rather than imprisoning or killing her. Agatha foreshadows her eventual return, telling Wanda that she’d need her help someday before Wanda puts the spell on her, to which Wanda agreed. With Agatha announced to be starring in a new Disney+ series, the MCU will make good on this promise, and while Wanda waking Agatha up and asking for her assistance is the most likely way that Harkness will return, it’s not the only one.

WandaVision ends with a secluded Wanda learning more about her newfound magic abilities and identity as the Scarlet Witch. Wanda is set to star alongside Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will also see the return of Karl Mordo. Mordo resolved to confiscate the magic of other sorcerers at the end of 2016’s Doctor Strange, so there are several reasons why Agatha might be awoken. Wanda and Doctor Strange may seek her assistance in defeating Mordo, or Wanda may want her to teach her about chaos magic as a means to defeat Strange’s former friend.

Agatha could also be recruited by Mordo instead of Wanda and Strange, to help him defeat the two Avengers. This would, inevitably, result in the two betraying one another since Mordo seeks to remove the magical abilities of all sorcerers and Agatha wishing to steal Wanda’s chaos magic. Given her unpredictable nature, Agatha could end up fighting against both parties at various points in the film.

An unfortunately common complaint about the MCU is its lack of compelling villains, but whether or not this is the case, Agatha Harkness was a crowd-pleasing antagonist, with Hahn being nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance. Agatha wasn’t strictly a hero or villain in the comics, so perhaps a less sinister side of Harkness will be shown in her upcoming series. Whichever way that Agatha Harkness returns from her harmless state at the end of WandaVision, Hahn’s darkly comedic portrayal will be a welcome return to the MCU.
