Better Call Saul executive producer Thomas Schnauz reveals how season 6 is continuing production without its lead star, Bob Odenkirk. The crooked criminal lawyer Saul Goodman was introduced in season 2 of the sensational series Breaking Bad which aired on AMC from 2008 to 2013. Its prequel series/Saul Goodman origin story premiered on the same network soon after in 2015.

Over 5 seasons so far, the show has chronicled con artist Jimmy McGill’s (Odenkirk) slow descent into his titular persona, Saul Goodman, alongside new characters like Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn), Nacho Varga (Michael Mando), and Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian) while bringing back beloved Breaking Bad characters Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) and Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). The highly anticipated sixth and final season began filming in March, but production was derailed by an unfortunate incident that took place late last month. Odenkirk suddenly collapsed on set and was rushed to the hospital. It was later revealed that Odenkirk suffered a minor heart attack but is expected to make a full recovery. However, the actor will understandably need some time to recuperate before returning to work on season 6.

In the meantime, Better Call Saul executive producer Thomas Schnauz reveals that the show is chugging along without Odenkirk. In an interview with Den of Geek, Schnauz says “Production is moving forward, steady but slow.” With Odenkirk still on the mend, the show is working around his absence by filming scenes that don’t involve his character. Read what Schnauz had to say below:

Everything with production is moving forward, steady but slow. We’re filming scenes that don’t involve Bob right now. I just finished editing my director’s cut of episode 607, and I addressed some notes on my script for 611. I’m still waiting to hear the dates of when I’ll prep and direct 611.

The show’s executive producer also addressed the rumor that season 6 will be split into two parts on AMC, much like the final season of Breaking Bad was. However, there is too much uncertainty right now due to COVID-19 and Odenkirk’s recovery to make this determination regarding how or when the final episodes will air. Although, showrunner Peter Gould has expressed hope that season 6 will be aired as a single entity.

Season 6 of Better Call Saul had already been delayed because of the pandemic, which was only exacerbated by Odenkirk’s medical emergency. However, the actor’s health should be the utmost priority right now and the timeliness of when season 6 finishes production should come second. It’s just good to know that Odenkirk is expected to be okay and the show is continuing production in any way they can. Season 6 was aiming for an early 2022 release date, but that is likely subject to change. Fans are surely willing to wait as long as necessary for Odenkirk to make a full recovery and return to the Better Call Saul set.
