Hall as the beloved title character and Carpenter as Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan. Carpenter played Dexter’s adoptive sister and the foul-mouthed detective for all eight seasons of the original series. Throughout the show, Debra is promoted to lieutenant and has a strong relationship with her brother before catching him in the act of killing in the season six finale. Since then, Dexter and Debra have had an up-and-down relationship in which Debra compromised her morals as a person and a police lieutenant to keep her brother’s secret. Carpenter has received much acclaim for her portrayal as Debra, especially in the final two seasons.

Carpenter has spoken in an interview with Variety on how she has moved towards the revival after Debra’s ending in the series finale, which have left many fans to question how she may appear to Dexter and comment on the many upcoming changes in his life. Carpenter shares how she plans to approach the revival, finding her return to the show in that way to be “cosmically profound”:

“I didn’t really feel like I wanted to go back and fix a broken score. I feel like Deb had a different ending than the show. So, I decided that my work was to go to the bottom of the ocean and collect her and see if she wanted to be a witness to watch an unmedicated, decoded, unpunished, unchecked serial killer experience himself. I wanted to massage her scar tissue.”

Dexter ended in Debra’s abrupt and tragic demise after being shot by a killer Dexter was pursuing and was subsequently taken off of life support by her brother when she was in a vegetative state. Aside from Debra’s death, the Dexter series finale was almost universally panned and frustrated many fans with the show ending with Dexter living in Oregon as a lumberjack after faking his demise and leaving behind his son. The finale was also the result of an underwhelming final season that saw Dexter quickly reuniting with his girlfriend Hannah, despite her previously attempting to kill Debra, and never being in danger of getting caught for his crimes.

Carpenter’s perspective on Debra is the reason why her performance has resonated with viewers of the show and her outlook for the revival  definitely opens new doors for the character. With the death of Debra, it has been confirmed her return will be as a ghost to Dexter and perhaps a flashback, similar to his father, Harry. It will be exciting to see how Debra will shape and impact Dexter and everything going on around him with his new lifestyle when Dexter: New Blood premieres on Showtime on November 7.
