Marvel has unveiled costumes for some of the characters featured in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Artwork in the form of a comic book cover has provided the first official tease at the heroes who will be banding together in the upcoming Phase 4 movie. Based on what’s revealed, the MCU is making some big changes.

The four characters Marvel has shown off are Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Wong (Benedict Wong), and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez). Though Marvel has revealed very little about the movie’s plot, the presumption is that the heroes’ goal will be to save the multiverse from an interdimensional threat, whether it be Dormammu, Nightmare, Mephisto, or some other villain from Marvel Comics. From the looks of things, the threat faced in Doctor Strange 2 isn’t one that the Sorcerer Supreme can deal with on his own, which is most likely why he and Wong will be teaming up with Wanda and America.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As more news develops, it’s possible that Doctor Strange’s team will expand to include more Marvel characters, such as Clea, Brother Voodoo, and more. But even if that’s not the case, Strange will still have a dependable group of heroes fighting alongside him, two of which being returning MCU heroes and the other a fresh face. What to expect from their Doctor Strange 2 stories is hard to say at this juncture, but what the main characters will be wearing once the action starts is a bit less mysterious now. Here’s what Doctor Strange 2’s costumes look like, and how these new looks compare to previous MCU movies and shows, as well as the comics.

Doctor Strange

Prior to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme was already in the same category as Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Iron Man, who have some of the most comic book accurate costumes in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Doctor Strange 2 doubled down on that by drawing even greater inspiration from the source material. First of all, Doctor Strange’s traditional look in the comics includes a symbol on the chest, which was left out of his solo movie and his appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. But the Doctor Strange 2 art suggests that it’s finally being incorporated into his costume. A second detail that’s certainly worth mentioning is the Eye of Agamotto, which is attached to the collar of his cloak. That’s how he wore it in the comics — as opposed to past MCU movies, in which it hung down in front of his chest.

The presence of the Eye of Agamotto may tease a major story development. It was destroyed by Thanos (Josh Brolin), but it’s curiously still in the possession of Doctor Strange. One explanation for this may be that Strange used a fake one during the Wakanda battle, with another theory being that he broke the rules of time travel and is using the Eye of Agamotto from another timeline, possibly because it’s the only way he can save the multiverse.

Wong

In Marvel Comics, Wong is the bald, green-clad Chinese monk and martial arts master who serves as a butler to Doctor Strange at the Sanctum Sanctorum. The MCU took steps to avoid racial stereotypes with its take on Wong by making big changes to his character and his role in Doctor Strange’s life. It even dropped his green color scheme in favor of the purple attire of the Masters of the Mystic Arts. Looking at his Doctor Strange 2 look, the MCU is continuing to distance Wong from his comic book counterpart. Wong appears to have a much thicker head of hair than before, which makes him look even less like the butler who assisted Doctor Strange in the classic comics. As far as the costume itself goes, it looks a bit more distinguished than what he was dressed in before, which could be an indication that he has moved up in rank in the Masters of the Mystic Arts.

Scarlet Witch

Thanks to WandaVision, the MCU’s Wanda Maximoff is finally the Scarlet Witch. After years of being the super-powered Avenger who got her abilities from a scientific experiment with the Mind Stone, Wanda has evolved into the mystical powerhouse from the comics. At long last, Marvel explored her magical backstory from the comics and made it a focal point of her character. Doctor Strange 2 will be picking up where the series left off by allowing her to be a part of the Sorcerer Supreme’s multiverse adventure.

In accordance with her magical transformation in the Disney+ series, Doctor Strange 2 has abandoned her outfits from the Avengers movies and — as expected — is instead using the costume that debuted in the WandaVision finale. It’s largely the same one, but it has received a notable tweak. Scarlet Witch’s red, full-body suit now has long sleeves that cover her entire arms. The addition of the sleeves brings her more in line with her design in modern comics. Everything else, including the long-missing headpiece, is being carried over from the costume she acquired in WandaVision.

America Chavez

As noted above, Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez is the one member of Doctor Strange’s team who happens to be new to the MCU. So for right now, the Doctor Strange 2 artwork is the only official look that Marvel has provided of her character thus far. The Young Avenger made her debut in 2017, and the teaser image suggests the MCU will follow her basic Marvel Comics version — including her use of star-shaped portals to traverse the multiverse.

In the comics, she’s depicted as sort of a patriotic superhero, considering that her codename is “Miss America”. It’s become clear from her costume that Doctor Strange 2 will be keeping this aspect of her character. Her gray jacket has the red-and-white stripes from the American flag on the shoulders and a blue strip of stars running down the sleeve. This design was taken straight from Marvel Comics. What’s missing from this look is America Chavez’s blue shirt with a white star in the middle. It could be that it’s been excluded for a good reason. Similar to how the MCU has evolved Scarlet Witch, the plan for America Chavez may be for her to start out a teenager who discovers powers in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and then suit up as a full-fledged superhero in a later outing.
