Here’s how Dracula ultimately met his end in the Castlevania season 2 finale. As the Lord of Vampires, Vlad “Dracula” Tepes is a fearsome foe, and one of the strongest creatures on either Earth or Hell. And yet, the combined strength of Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades and Adrian “Alucard” Tepes manages to get the job done in season 2, but not without an epic fight.

For centuries, Dracula brought fear, terror and death to the kingdoms of Europe. Eventually having grown tired of this lifestyle, he retreated behind the walls of his teleporting castle and became a recluse – that is, until a physician named Lisa approached the castle without fear and won the vampire’s heart in Castlevania’s opening scene. The two lived together happily for some time until the day the Church accused Lisa of cavorting with the devil and burned her at the stake. In the wake of this, Dracula declared war on mankind and kicked off the main events of the show. He assembled an army of vampires, demons, and other creatures, and was determined to rid the world of humanity.

The task of even getting inside Dracula’s imposing castle, let alone killing the vampire himself, seemed impossible to most. The show’s trio of heroes is able to get inside after Sypha effectively hacks the castle’s teleportation system, leading to a brutal battle in the main hall. After getting past the guards, Trevor, Sypha and Alucard engage in a three-on-one fight against Dracula himself, which eventually leads to a one-on-one between Alucard and his father. All the strength they could muster appears insufficient as Dracula nearly kills Alucard, before having a crisis of conscience and realizing he can’t possibly kill his own son.

In the scene, Dracula speaks to Lisa as if she’s still there, lamenting the kind of sorrow and madness he must have been swallowed by to try to kill his own child. “I must already be dead,” the vampire king says in the end, standing still and allowing Alucard to drive a stake through his heart. Even that isn’t enough to fully kill a vampire so old and powerful, however, so Trevor enters the room to deal the final blow by cutting off Dracula’s head, bringing Castlevania season 2’s main threat to an end.

The sympathetic villain trope is far from new, but it’s played to particularly powerful effect in Castlevania. Dracula is one of the show’s most compelling characters and his death is a devastating moment, despite all the pain he’s caused. Ultimately, not even the combined efforts of Trevor, Alucard and Sypha could vanquish him. At the end of Castlevania season 2, Dracula simply gives up. Of course, season 4 would reveal his followers were determined to pull him out of Hell to wreak havoc once more, which is a plan that plays out in unpredictable ways.
