How I Met Your Father: 10 Predictions For Season 2, According to Reddit

Fans of How I Met Your Mother have been cautiously curious about the new spin-off show How I Met Your Father and now that it has finished up its first season, the series has shown a lot of promise. The final episode contained a lot of twists and surprises that reminded audiences strongly of its predecessor, making viewers all the more interested in seeing what will come next in season 2.

The season left every character in a bit of a cliffhanger, giving viewers plenty of room to guess and theorize about how things will end up working out. Between Ian’s return, Jesse’s kiss with Meredith, Charlie and Valentina’s break up, Ellen’s new job and potential relationship, and Sid and Hannah’s marriage, the new season will no doubt start strong. Redditors have plenty of fan theories about what direction the show writers will take.

Sid And Hannah Will Be Endgame

Sid and Hannah had been in a long-distance relationship for all of season 1 and it was revealed that the distance will continue as Hannah has taken on more opportunities outside of New York. In a surprise twist, the two ended up eloping in the season finale.

Redditor rodepleogim says that Sid and Hannah “just seem like that couple that has been through everything and [have] endured together.” For this reason, they believe that the couple will be able to handle another year of long-distance and will end season 2 on top.

Sid And Hannah Will Split

Not everyone agrees that this couple is meant to be. With Hannah only appearing every few episodes, some audiences didn’t feel that they were able to get to know her or invest in her relationship with Sid.

“It’s clear to me that eventually Sid and Hannah will not work,” says Redditor No_Attitude_5245. The couple was in pretty major disagreement before their surprise announcement that they had gotten married, which does not give audiences much confidence in their impulsive decision. So season 2 may well see the end for Hannah and Sid.

Audiences Will Meet Ellen’s Ex-Wife

Ellen moved to New York to start over after a divorce that left her heartbroken. At the end of season 1, she is finally starting to see her life come together as she landed a new job and secured a date with a girl she had been interested in.

Redditor Sisiwakanamru doesn’t think that things can go too perfectly for Ellen. “I think sooner or later, we’re gonna meet Ellen’s ex-wife, hopefully next season.” The introduction of Ellen’s ex would certainly be interesting, with guaranteed jokes for days from Ellen, who is one of How I Met Your Father‘s funniest characters. Very little about Ellen’s ex has been discussed which gives the show plenty of opportunities to bring in an exciting guest star or even connect the character to HIMYM somehow.

Ian Will Have To Leave Again

The biggest surprise of the season 1 finale was the reveal that Ian, who is one of the HIMYF characters that could be the father so far, had returned. Sophie went on a date with Ian in the very first episode and struggled greatly with his departure to Australia for work as a marine biologist, so his return was an exciting one for Sophie.

However, Redditor No_Attitude_5254 feels that  “distance because of his job will always be an issue.” Ian and Sophie are seemingly perfect for each other, but his career is bound to take him away again, similar to Victoria from HIMYM. Therefore, Ian may not end up being “the one” for Sophie.

The Gang Will Find Barney’s Blog

The appearance of Robin in the final episode of season 1 has further opened up the conversation on future cameos. In 2022, the characters from HIMYM are each doing their own thing around New York, but fans can assume that Barney’s blog is still going strong.

Redditor AxltheHuman believes that the next season “They’re gonna reference Barney’s blog and some characters will cite some of his laws/theories.” This would be a lot of fun for the series, as it can also explore the different perspectives the 2022 characters might have on some of the slightly less politically correct things Barney wrote in 2005.

The Next Cameo Will Be Tracy

On the same note of cameos, Redditor Makp-jaeger thinks that the next cameo will be from “the mother” herself, Tracy. “I really hope that we are able to get to see her,” they said, pointing out that there are only a couple more years that she would be able to appear.

The big reveal of HIMYM was that Ted is a widower during his long talk with his children and that the point of the story was to gage if his kids would be ready for him to date again. Since Tracy passes away in 2024, there isn’t much time left for audiences to catch her cameo.

Jesse Won’t End Up Getting Back With Meredith

A common trope of sitcoms is the big misunderstanding. Audiences only saw Jesse’s kiss with Meredith from Sophie’s perspective, and she didn’t stick around to ask questions. So it is possible that the situation was misunderstood. Since Jesse is suspected to be the HIMYF counterpart to HIMYM‘s Robin, audiences are expecting Jesse and Sophie to eventually end up together.

“In Sophie’s perspective it probably did look like Jesse was getting back together with Meredith, but I don’t think that’s the case,” said Redditor YouKantseeme. It does seem likely that the next season will show the situation from Jesse’s point of view, revealing that he still chose Sophie. Unfortunately, he will likely have to deal with the fact that Sophie will be dating Ian.

Sid Will Date Valentina

If audiences have learned any lessons from watching nine seasons of HIMYM, it is that anything can happen. Redditor Nicolette_dary has kept this in mind with their theory that Sid and Valentina will be the ones to end up together.

“Their friendship is great and I can just see it happening,” they said, confessing that this plot option just makes sense. With Valentina’s relationship with Charlie over and the seemingly doomed marriage of Sid and Hannah, it could be possible that they end up in each other’s arms sometime in season 2.  Since they are both two of How I Met Your Father‘s best characters, fans would surely enjoy the pairing.

Sophie Will Discover She Is Pregnant

Audiences may expect How I Met Your Father to follow a similar formula to its parent show, but writers changing up the order of events would certainly turn viewers for a loop. Redditor Abeybabbby676767 predicts that Sophie will become pregnant with her son sooner in the show rather than later.

“I think she’s going to end up being pregnant with Jesses [sic] baby,” they said, which would put a lot of pressure on Sophie, Jesse, and of course Ian. If the writers end up taking this route, and if Jesse goes on tour with Meredith, it could make for an interesting return home for Jesse.

There Will Be Another “Father”

If Sophie ends up pregnant, it would completely change the nature of her story to her son. Therefore, Redditor Alwaysbhere theorizes that the show would segue into a story about how she met her husband, meaning that her son has both a father and a step-father.

This would be a fairly complex storyline, but nothing abnormal to the writing that the franchise has become known for. Alwaysbhere suspects that after Jesse is revealed to be the son’s biological father, she would say “‘and now let me talk about how I met your dad…’ -as in the husband.” This prediction may be a little out there, but it would certainly add an interesting dynamic to the story.
