It was recently announced by Hulu that a How I Met Your Mother spinoff starring Hilary Duff was in the works. The new show is set to take place a few years after the events of the original series and will follow the main character Sophie, who is telling her kids the story of how she met their father.

It’s always difficult for a spinoff to live up to its predecessor, especially when a show is as popular as How I Met Your Mother was. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have potential, even if fans are a bit wary about the new series. There are plenty of things How I Met Your Father could do to pay tribute to long-time fans, and most of them shouldn’t be too difficult to incorporate into the sitcom.

8 Nod To The Yellow Umbrella (Or Blue French Horn)

The yellow umbrella and the blue french horn were symbols for the two loves of Ted’s life. One of the greatest lessons Ted learned throughout his journey is that there isn’t one singular person out there for everyone. Robin wasn’t the fairy tale girl he had dreamt up in his head, but he came to realize that it didn’t matter.

Ted loved both Tracy and Robin at different points in his life and that didn’t invalidate the importance of either of his relationships. The props came to act as the show’s logo, so it would be fitting if How I Met Your Father could find a way to either incorporate or play off of them.

7 “Let’s Go To The Mall”

Robin Sparkles was a teenage pop star in Canada, but the gang managed to get “Let’s Go To The Mall,” blasting from the speakers on more than one occasion.

It would be fairly easy to play the song in the background of a How I Met Your Fathe scene, and would likely be missed by those who haven’t seen the original series. Including Robin’s hit would be a nice reminder that both shows take place in the same world, without having to do anything extravagant.

6 Marshall’s Famous Nessie Discovery

Marshall was confident that the Loch Ness monster existed, but the rest of the gang didn’t buy into any of Marshall’s wild theories. It’s never verbally stated in the show, but fans spotted a newspaper clipping in the back of Marshall’s present-day office, reporting that a New York City lawyer found and captured Nessie.

The official discovery of the Loch Ness monster is a big deal, so it shouldn’t be too hard to casually mention how bizarre the revelation was. Given that it surely brought Marshall a lot of fame, it would make sense for him to be name-dropped.

5 The Bro Code

In the world of How I Met Your Mother, it’s far too easy to come across a copy of “The Bro Code.” Barneys states that “The Bro Code has replaced the Gideons’ Bible at select hotels throughout the country,” and he’s not bluffing.

Marshall even finds a copy of it in the seat-back pocket on his flight. With how many times the gang has accidentally stumbled upon Barney’s self-published books, it would be more unlikely for them not to be mentioned in the spinoff.

4 Cameos From Original Characters

There’s no way to know the likelihood of whether or not the main cast would be willing to appear in the spinoff, but the show was filled with so many reoccurring actors, it should be easy enough to score at least a few.

Whether it’s Carl the bartender, Patrice, or one of Ted’s ex-girlfriends, they could easily make cameos in ways that wouldn’t feel forced. While including the gang in some shape or form would be ideal, bringing back minor characters is a much more realistic possibility.

3 A Visit To MacLaren’s Pub

To have some semblance of originality, How I Met Your Father will likely want to change the main setting. But that doesn’t mean the new gang can’t pop into MacLaren’s for old time’s sake.

They don’t have to stay for long, and they could insult the bar as a way to poke fun at the original series. Word about “Puzzles,” the short-lived bar Ted and Barney ran from their apartment, spread around the city at one point, and even that could be brought up with little to no effort.

2 Name Dropping Robin As A Famous News Anchor

Robin put her career above everything else in her life, and her devotion to her job was admirable. She didn’t have a lot of luck at the beginning of How I Met Your Mother, and it was difficult to see Robin’s talents wasted on jobs that didn’t showcase her abilities.

At the end of the series, Robin finally accomplished her goals and traveled around the world as a famous news anchor. Her face even appeared on a bus passing by Ted and his daughter, so name-dropping Robin, or even putting her poster on the subway, would be a natural way to incorporate her into the world.

1 The GNB Headquarters

The GNB Headquarters was a major milestone in Ted’s architectural career. He’d spent years trying and failing to get his dream off the ground, and once Ted became a professor it seemed unlikely that his designs would come to life.

It was Ted’s big break, and he became a well-known architect after an impressive job well done. It would be worth having a character walk by one of Ted’s buildings, even if its significance isn’t directly commented on.
