A new clip from How I Met Your Father season 1, episode 8 properly introduces Jesse’s ex Meredith, played by Gossip Girl alum Leighton Meester. Though there was some apprehension when How I Met Your Father was first announced, the series has gradually found its footing over the course of its first season to truly stand apart from its predecessor. Using the same format as CBS’ How I Met Your Mother, HIMYF follows the romantic trials and tribulations of Sophie (Hilary Duff) as, well into the future, she recounts the story of how she met her partner to her son. Kim Cattrall plays the Sophie of 2050.

How I Met Your Father has been steadily deepening the backstories and characterizations of its new ensemble through events like the introduction of Sophie’s mother (Paget Brewster). The next episode of the series will bring back another key member of someone’s past: Meredith, the ex-girlfriend of Jesse (Chris Lowell) who famously rejected his marriage proposal in a viral video. Meester, best known for playing Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl, put in a small appearance in the How I Met Your Father pilot.

Now fans are set to learn a lot more about Meredith. In a new clip from How I Met Your Father episode 8 shared online by TVLine, Meredith arrives at Jesse’s apartment looking for him. However, she instead finds a disgruntled Sid (Suraj Sharma), who is still not at all pleased that Meredith left his best friend in the lurch. Check out their unhappy reunion down below.

For reasons that have yet to be revealed, Meredith has returned to discuss something with Jesse. It could be that she’s looking to apologize for what happened, or perhaps she even wants to get back together. How I Met Your Father has shown Jesse slowly getting back into dating in the wake of his heartbreak, but he hasn’t formed any major connections aside from the lightly blooming feelings between himself and Sophie. Meredith’s arrival could disrupt that, assuming Jesse is willing to hear her out. Either way, he’s in for quite the surprise when he gets home.

When How I Met Your Father revealed Meester was Jesse’s mysterious ex, it seemed inevitable that she would return at some point down the line. Between Gossip Girl and her underrated ABC comedy Single Parents, Meester has racked up a good number of television credits, and it’s always exciting when she gets to join another cast. It’ll be interesting to see what Meredith wants on How I Met Your Father; depending on how things turn out with Jesse, she might even stick around for a while.
