The creators of the How I Met Your Mother spinoff series, How I Met Your Father, have spoken out about a recent possible Goliath National Bank Easter egg that appeared in episode 9. Originally developed as a television pilot titled How I Met Your Dad featuring the original series’ Tracy McConnell, the spinoff was eventually retitled and recast after the pilot did not move forward. How I Met Your Father season 1 finally premiered on January 18, with Hilary Duff in the Ted Mosby equivalent role as Sophie, and Kim Cattrall starring as the older Sophie and series narrator.

How I Met Your Father acts on a similar premise to the original, following young New Yorker Sophie as she searches for her future true love, all the while navigating life in the Big Apple with her group of 30-something friends. In addition to Duff and Cattrall, the series features a talented cast main cast that includes Chris Lowell, Francia Raisa, Suraj Sharma, Tom Ainsley, and Tien Tran. In the latest episode, Tran’s character, Ellen, prepares for an interview at the Goliath Corporation. Many fans assumed this was a not-so-subtle nod to the original How I Met Your Mother series, hinting at Barney and Marshall’s former workplace, Goliath National Bank.

In an interview with TVLine, series creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger addressed the latest episode’s reference to the Goliath Corporation and what it could possibly mean for the shared universe between the two shows. Asked whether the name was simply a wink at the original show, or whether Goliath Corporation was in fact directly connected to How I Met Your Mother, the pair kept things vague. Specifically, Berger emphasized that nothing in the show is “accidental,” hinting that Goliath could possibly play a larger role in the series moving forward. Read Aptaker and Berger’s response below:

Berger: Obviously, nothing we do in that respect is accidental, but it’s too early to say if there is a bigger connection going on there.

Aptaker: Once Amazon bought Whole Foods, it felt like, “Who can’t own an organic grocery store?” It felt like a good synergy.

Even before the spinoff series premiered, many fans of How I Met Your Mother wondered if the two shows would connect in any way at all. Initially, the announcement of a completely original protagonist in Duff’s Sophie seemed to dash any hopes of a crossover. However, it was not until How I Met Your Father episode 1 that audiences were pleasantly surprised to discover that the main characters live in Marshall and Lily’s old apartment, a staple location of the original series. What’s more, the return of Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Bell Bundy as The Captain and Becky, respectively, in episode 9 also surprised fans and paved the way for more explicit HIMYM callbacks in future.

With such a large amount of Easter eggs being featured in the latest How I Met Your Father episode, it can be assumed that the amount will continue to grow as the show goes on. Furthermore, even though the creators have expressed that it is too early to know which direction the series will go when it comes to connections to the original, the number of fans who consistently express their hope for more callbacks should be enough to convince them. How I Met Your Father continues with its season finale on March 15.
