By the time season 6 of How I Met Your Mother rolled around, the show still had plenty of conflict and storylines to work with. Even though half a dozen years had passed since the first episode premiered, the characters had a lot of room to grow, relationships could still flourish, and some drama could very well be thrown in the mix. The showrunners clearly knew this, and thus came up with the fresh batch of episodes that made up the sixth season.

As usual, plenty of fun cameos and special guests joined the gang for a couple of very fun episodes, Ted met his new love interest – which was quite the slow burns – and Barney met a woman who could very well be his next great love after Robin. With so much happening, it’s hard to pinpoint the best moments, but let’s see what can be done through the ten best episodes!

10 Legendaddy (8.3)

Barney had always hurt deeply over the fact that he didn’t know who his father was. Even though Loretta did a wonderful job raising him and his brother, Barney still wanted to meet the man shrouded in so much mystery.

It was in the nineteenth episode of season 6 that it finally happened – Barney met his father. However, he was extremely sad to find out how much of a bring life he led…but what he was truly sad about was the fact that his father wasn’t present as he was growing up. Season 6 really did bring the emotions out!

9 A Change of Heart (8.3)

After meeting Nora and becoming infatuated with her, Barney is ready to go on a second date with her. However, he still refuses to admit that it means anything to him, and as per usual, he says he only wants to sleep with her. He goes as far as telling Nora he wants to be a husband and father, but is it really true?

Meanwhile, Robin begins dating someone that seems more dog than man. And of course, the gang has lots of laughs at the expense of his canine traits.

8 Cleaning House (8.3)

Before Barney found out who his father was, he and his brother James were helping out their mother Loretta cleaning up the house. Accidentally, they stumble upon a lead that might just result in finding one of their fathers.

The gang joins the two brothers in anticipation, but in the end, James meets his father, while Barney still remains in the dark. But the moments in which Barney’s in denial are priceless!

7 Challenge Accepted (8.5)

The last episode of the sixth season of How I Met Your Mother sees an extremely bummed out Ted, dealing with the aftermath of his relationship with Zoey, that has ended due to the whole Arcadian dispute.

Since Ted has the habit of getting back together with his ex-girlfriends, Robin and Barney go on a mission to keep him from doing it, since going back to the past isn’t a good idea. The episode ends on an interesting note, a little ways down the road, where the audience finds out Barney is about to get married.

6 Last Words (8.6)

Marshall’s father dying was arguably one of the most heartbreaking moments on the show. But more on that later; “Last Words” follows the tragedy when the gang goes with Marshall to Minnesota and tries to support him and his family throughout the duration of the funeral.

When Marshall finds out he has one last message from his father on his voicemail, things get even sadder, prompting a conversation about the importance of last words.

5 Glitter (8.6)

Episodes involving Robin Sparkles are always welcomed by fans with open arms, and this one was no exception. Featuring a special guest in the form of Nicole Scherzinger, this episode features another glimpse into Robin’s past.

Lily is in full-on baby fever mode, and when she finds out Nicole’s Jessica Glitter had a baby and her friendship with Robin ended as a result, she starts to worry Robin won’t want to be her friend anymore once she gets pregnant.

4 Subway Wars (8.6)

Once the gang hears that Woody Allen has been spotted at a restaurant, they decide to race each other in order to find out who knows the city better. They each use a different mode of transportation to try and reach the final destination, but who will win the end – Ted, Lily, Marshall, Robin or Barney?

3 Oh Honey (8.8)

Nicole Scherzinger wasn’t the only famous pop star that had a guest appearance on this season of How I Met Your Mother. Katy Perry starred as Honey, a lovable yet extremely gullible young lady that just so happens to be Zoey’s cousin.

During the course of the episode, Ted ends up realizing that he’s actually in love with Zoey, who had been his rival for most of the season up until that point.

2 Bad News (8.9)

“Bad News” was a heart-breaking episode. Although there’s the hilarious part where Lily and Marshall meet a doctor who may or may not be Barney, that doesn’t placate the gut-punch of the last few minutes of the episode.

Marshall’s father dying was horrible. Up until this point, the show had been fairly light-hearted, even when dealing with sadder situations. But there was no possible joke that could make this better.

1 Blitzgiving (9.1)

“Blitzgiving” included what was perhaps one of the best thought-out jokes the show ever came up with. Guest-starring Jorge Garcia as Steve, the guy who always missed the best part of everything, it was hilarious from start to finish.

Using a gag that directly related to Garcia’s role as a lottery winner in Lost might have gone over many people’s heads, but it’s worth a re-watch for that alone!
