How I Met Your Mother will likely always be one of the most beloved sitcoms. Whether fans love Barney, Ted, or Robin, they know that they at least laugh with all of these incredible characters. In nine seasons, this show certainly gained traction with their fans, and there are many that are still quoting Barney’s playbook or Lily’s wise words.

Of course, audiences probably also fell in love with the real men and women behind these quirky characters. In case fans are wondering how much this hilarious cast earned to bring these characters to life, we’ve made a list. While most of the characters have kept their salaries under wraps, there are definitely a few that have made it public. Here is the main cast and how much they were making per episode before the series came to an end.

Updated on March 10th, 2022 by George Chrysostomou: The salary of some of these incredible actors is still being discussed with the release of How I Met Your Father. At the show’s height, it was drawing in millions of viewers and the pay for each performer very much reflects those incredible numbers as reported by Celebrity Net Worth.

7 Cristin Millioti – $25,000 Per Episode

While it hasn’t been officially released what this woman’s salary was from playing the infamous mother on this show who had a terrible ending, one can make a pretty confident estimation. Cristin Millioti has a net worth of about $2 million and is said to make an annual salary of around $350,000. Since she starred in about 14 episodes per year (for 2013 and 2014), that would mean that her How I Met Your Mother salary was around $25,000 per episode of playing Tracy McConnell.

That’s not bad, and fans certainly loved this adorable and talented lady as the mother. In 25 episodes, it’s easy to do the math on how much this role contributed to her overall net worth.

6 Wayne Brady – $30,000 Per Episode

Wayne Brady is said to have made about $400,000 in total earnings from this series. He appears in 14 episodes, which would work out to be about $30,000 per episode. That’s not a bad deal, considering he’s not really a main character in any of the episodes he appears in.

Wayne Brady has a net worth of about $10 million, so he’s certainly not hurting for dough. Fans know and love this man on the show as Barney’s brother, James. Of course, this show is certainly not Wayne’s claim to fame, so we’re not surprised he made a pretty decent amount from appearing as a secondary character. Fans love this role, but this comedy actor and game show host is a man of many skills.

5 Cobie Smulders – $225,000 Per Episode

Cobie Smulders plays the beautiful and brilliant Robin. Most of the main five cast members were earning the same amount in the final season. Cobie was pulling in about $225,000 per episode before the show came to a close for her How I Met Your Mother salary. That’s about $5 million a season, which certainly isn’t anything to complain about.

This bombshell has a net worth of around $20 million, which ties her for the lowest of the main cast. Still, that’s impressive, and while most of this came from her role as Robin, she’s also been a recurring gal in the Avengers series, and even stars in a new television show, called Stumptown, which is a good suggestion for those looking for more Cobie-goodness.

4 Josh Radnor – $225,000 Per Episode

Josh Radnor made the same amount as his co-stars, which might seem odd since he was supposed to be the main character. However, he has the same net worth as Cobie, capping it off around $20 million. Josh’s role as Ted Mosby is certainly his claim to fame as he’s the narrator and leading man of this sitcom.

Besides, making $225,000 an episode for a sitcom (with around 24 episodes a season) is pretty amazing, and he certainly isn’t crying over this being his largest role to date. However, if fans miss this humble man, he actually stars in a few other television shows and even has one in production now.

3 Alyson Hannigan – $225,000 Per Episode

Alyson Hannigan also made $225,000 per episode in the final season. However, this show wasn’t actually Alyson’s first big role, and her net worth hovers around $30 million. People probably know her from the American Pie movies, right?

Of course, she will always be Lily Aldrin in fans’ hearts, and Alyson was a perfect fit for this role, and it’ll probably be what people remember most about her. Again, she made the same as her co-stars, which, again, is nothing to cry about, and also isn’t very surprising.

2 Jason Segel – $225,000 Per Episode

Jason Segel stole fans’ hearts as Marshall Erikson, and this is probably his most iconic and memorable role. He also made $225,000 per episode for his How I Met Your Mother salary, which makes sense. However, this actor has also dabbled quite a bit on the big screen and has several blockbuster movies under his belt.

Fans probably know Forgetting Sarah Marshall or Sex Tape, which helped bring this man’s net worth up to about $40 million. He’s also quite prominent in comedy films, so if audiences need another fill of this wholesome man, they know where to head. Of course, Jason was making the same as his co-stars when the show came to an end in 2014. However, he’s moved on to some larger roles since he was the humble and hilarious Marshall, so we’re sure his net worth is far from its peak.

1 Neil Patrick Harries – $400,000 Per Episode

According to Insider, Neil was earning nearly half a million per episode in the final season of the show. This made him one of the highest-earning television actors at the time, which probably isn’t surprising. Of course, he’s iconic as Barney Stinson, so it’s likely also not a surprise that he was earning this much dough per episode.

Clearly, he was making the most out of the main cast. This, on the other hand, might surprise fans, but Neil also had a much higher claim to fame than his co-stars. As well, one could argue that Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson was one of the main reasons for the continued success of this sitcom. Ironically, Neil’s net worth is currently pretty even with Jason Segel’s, hovering around $40 million. Barney’s character made the most on the show, and clearly, that proves true IRL, too.
