According to star Alyson Hannigan, a How I Met Your Mother reunion show is unlikely due to the series finale. How I Met Your Mother premiered on CBS in 2005, where it clicked with critics and audiences, eventually becoming one of the network’s biggest hits. The show would only increase in popularity throughout its nine-season run, teasing audiences with new clues pertaining to the mystery of who the titular mother could be, leading to some of the series’ most emotional moments.

How I Met Your Mother centers on an architect named Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), who recounts to his children the journey he went on with his four best friends that led him to cross paths with their mother. The sitcom starred Radnor, Hannigan, Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, and Bob Saget as the voice of older Ted. After nine seasons, the series not only revealed who the mother was, but wrapped up the central storylines of each of its respective characters. However, the finale seemed to leave a sour taste in the mouths of fans, becoming one of the most hated series finales of all time. While some fans may be hopeful for some sort of reunion show, Hannigan is doubtful that will come to fruition.

In a recent interview on E! Online‘s Daily Pop, Hannigan revealed her thoughts on the possibility of a How I Met Your Mother reunion show. Although she revealed she would be game to return, she explained why she thinks a reunion show is unlikely by stating, “Honestly, when I read the last episode script, I was sort of sad because I felt like there was no chance of a reunion, because they kind of gave away all the cards.” She went on to say, “They sort of showed everything. I was like, ‘Wait, you guys, now we won’t get to do a reunion because you’re telling the future and telling the stories of what we’re all gonna do.

Hannigan hasn’t been shy about how she feels about the show’s polarizing final episode. In fact, back in 2017, Hannigan expressed her issues with the How I Met Your Mother series finale. While the series’ final episode revealed where each of the core characters ended up, it didn’t stop fans from creating different “what if” scenarios that resolved some of their issues with the conclusion. However, the show’s overall final season didn’t receive the poor reviews many would think, currently resting at a fresh 75 percent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The sitcom served as one of the most refreshing of its kind throughout its storied run, offering terrific performances from its talented cast, sharp writing, and great mysteries to boot. However, the series’ final season and episode were a significant step down from the show’s previous seasons, dragging out a poorly conceived one location premise and letting down its cast of characters with shoddy material. While the final episode certainly wraps the story up with a bow, the potential for a reunion show is still there, which could tackle the series’ most beloved moments and episodes with the cast. With HBO Max hosting a reunion for Friends and The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, CBS All Access could easily follow suit by providing fans of the show with a How I Met Your Mother reunion, but only time will tell if those wheels start turning.
