Spoilers for Legacies Season 3 Episode 3

In a surprising twist, Legacies brought back a popular TheVampire Diaries character for a quick cameo: the much-beloved Carolina Forbes, played by Candice King. This particular return has been eagerly anticipated by many since the spinoff show first premiered in 2018.

The first few episodes of Legacies season 3 followed the Salvatore School students as they prepared for the theater premiere of Salvatore: The Musical. During this process, Josie, Lizzie, Jed, and Kaleb worked to effectively embody the characters who contributed to their school’s founding. Acting in the roles of Elena, Caroline, Stefan, and Damon, central figures from the wildly successful television predecessor TheVampire Diaries, these high schoolers reenacted critical moments from the show as part of its “historical” recounting of what led to the institution’s existence.

According to TVLine, executive producer Julie Plec reached out to Candice King for a brief cameo in the musical episode. Here, amid play practice, Lizzie received a letter from Caroline. As she looked over the message, King read the words in voiceover, finally making her first appearance on Legacies. In an interview, Plec explained that the cameo, while unexpected, has been in the works for a while:

Candice is a good friend of mine and Brett’s, and there’s a soft spot in her heart for this show. She has said over the years that, she will show up one day, but she wanted a break after The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. She wanted to go out and live a non-Caroline Forbes life for a while. But she has always said, “If you never need something small or simple, just let me know.” So I just sent a text and she said, “Absolutely.”

During the heyday of The Vampire Diaries, King’s Caroline Forbes was a popular character. Originally a high schooler mainly preoccupied with clambering up the social ladder, she endeared herself to fans with her emotional growth throughout the series. By the end of The Vampire Diaries, she had become a surrogate mother to two young girls, Josie and Lizzie, who would grow up to become two of the teen protagonists on Legacies.

King’s reappearance was a nostalgic, emotional moment that paid homage to the show’s origins. It also contributed to the episode’s amusing meta-commentary, as the characters of Legacies both recreated and gently mocked the dramatic highs-and-lows of The Vampire Diaries, including its unpredictable deaths, multiple love triangles, and tortured monologues. Of course, King’s portrayal of Caroline on the titular show remains a fan favorite. Her transformation into a vampire led to an arc that deepened her character’s personality, allowing for a multidimensional figure who proved fiercely loyal to her friends and who was always brave in the face of adversity. It will be intriguing to see who else Legacies brings back in future episodes, considering this particular cameo’s success.
