Capcom’s Resident Evil Village continues the story of Ethan Winters, picking up roughly three years after his encounter with the Baker family in Resident Evil 7. After a tragic series of events that sees Chris Redfield murder Mia Winters, Ethan finds himself in a mysterious European village which is infested with horrific creatures.

Continuing the mechanics set up in the previous game, Resident Evil Village is once again played from a first-person perspective, although Ethan is much more fleshed out as an actual character this time around. In typical Resident Evil game fashion, players will need to take down enemies and solve puzzles as they unravel the mysteries of the village and surrounding areas.

Resident Evil games have traditionally not been very long, but highly encourage subsequent playthroughs with extra content. Resident Evil Village is very much the same way, even though it clocks in a little longer than most entries in the series. So, how long does the new Resident Evil Village game take to beat?

How Long Resident Evil Village’s Main Story Is

Because of the time it takes to beat, Resident Evil Village may not be the longest game in the franchise, but it is a bit longer than Resident Evil 7. Ethan starts in the charred remains of the titular village but progresses to other locations throughout the game, like the imposing Castle Dimitrescu. The previous game’s main story ran roughly 4-5 hours, but Resident Evil Village takes roughly 6-8 hours to finish without engaging with any of RE8’s side content. Screen Rant’s own review playthrough on Normal clocked in at 9 hours and 20 minutes, exploring as much as possible and collecting every optional treasure scattered around the village. Higher difficulty levels in Resident Evil Village, of course, can extend playtime as well, with the Hardcore and Village of Shadows modes significantly bumping up the challenge.

The good news is that beating Resident Evil Village once unlocks a bunch of additional content which can change how the game is played. The first is a New Game Plus mode, which carries over all weapons and items in Ethan’s inventory, excluding key items. Extra optional weapons can be unlocked, which can be picked up once Ethan reached The Duke’s shop.

The other major piece of content unlocked after beating Resident Evil Village is The Mercenaries, the popular arcade mode that’s been a staple of the franchise for years. The Mercenaries is basically a time attack mode which has players killing a set amount of enemies as quickly and efficiently as possible. While the main story of Resident Evil Village may only clock in around 10 hours, there’s clearly plenty of incentive to keep playing and beat the game again.

Resident Evil Village launches on May 7 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
