Gamers have been spending a lot of time watching their characters walk in circles lately, thanks to the new game Loop Hero. The game from Devolver Digital challenges players to fight their way through multiple levels of enemies, but does so by giving them control of an unusual aspect of gameplay.

Loop Hero is the latest game to become something of an overnight sensation, with Steam registering over 150,000 players of Loop Hero in the first day alone. The gameplay itself is fairly simple. A hero character walks on a procedurally generated looped path, fighting whatever monsters they encounter. All battles are on autoplay, meaning players themselves can’t affect them once they start. What players can affect is the placement of world-building tiles, which add either monsters to fight, status effects, or buffs to their hero character.  Players must also manage the weapons and armor their hero is wearing, upgrading as better equipment is discovered. Heroes continue on walking on an endless loop until they are either killed in combat or ordered to retreat to home base by the player. Depending on when and how a hero makes it back to safety, they take with them a certain percentage of collected resources that they can spend to expand their settlement and earn permanent upgrades.

Players of Loop Hero looking to beat the game will need to fight their way through four levels, or as they’re referred to in the game, chapters. Each chapter ends when the player has placed enough tiles to fill a meter that summons the chapter boss. Once the player has defeated that boss, the next chapter is unlocked. Unlike some games with roguelite elements, players who have progressed to chapter two and beyond do not need to start back at chapter one when they die; instead, they can choose which unlocked chapter to play each time they embark on a new expedition.

What’s the Difference Between Levels of Loop Hero?

The biggest difference between the chapters of Loop Hero is the difficulty level of monsters they’ll be fighting. Monsters will start with different levels of attack power based on the chapter, as well as gaining more attack power for each loop a player completes. Monsters in later chapters will also have more special abilities. The reward for playing a higher chapter, however, is that players will collect resources faster, and have a higher maximum number of resources they can carry back to camp. Players in chapter one, for instance, can only bring back a maximum of 10 of each resource, while chapter two allows for a maximum of 20. Each chapter also features a different end boss that must be defeated.

Loop Hero is a mesmerizing and addictive experience that encourages experimentation in gameplay. Each level of Loop Hero requires multiple runs before players have unlocked enough permanent upgrades to defeat the chapter boss, meaning players will be watching their characters walk in endless circles for hours to come.
