Miles Morales is an uber-popular superhero, largely thanks to his starring role in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. While Miles has become an important hero in Marvel’s main continuity, that wasn’t always the case in the comics. The new Spider-Man was originally from a different Earth until Secret Wars changed everything.

Miles Morales first debuted in the pages of Ultimate Fallout #4 and was co-created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. The new Spider-Man had both similar and different powers from the original Spider-Man, including being able to produce both venom and electro-energy blasts. Miles’ adventures originally took place on Earth-1610, similarly how they do in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as Peter Parker was killed on his Earth. However, in Secret Wars, following the character’s immense popularity, Marvel decided to merge multiple universes, including Miles’ Earth-1610, into their main continuity on Earth-616.

Secret Wars (2015) by Jonathan Hickman, Esad Ribic, sees the Marvel Multiverse destroyed, as multiple fragmented universes have merged into a planet called Battleworld ruled by Doctor Doom. The event was a modern play on the classic Secret Wars storyline from Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck, and Bob Layton. In the series sixth issue, Miles and Peter end up on the edge of Battleworld, where they see the planet struggling to put itself together. They encounter Molecule Man – who has the immense power of the Beyonders. Molecule Man asks the Spider-Men whether they brought him anything to eat, to which Miles pulls out an eight-year-old hamburger from his pocket (he was in stasis for that long). After Doom is taken down via an Infinity Gauntlet-wielding Black Panther, Miles has a flashback to the moment with Molecule Man. It turns out, the villain saved Miles (and brought his mom and his Uncle Aaron back to life) as a thank you for feeding his hunger.

It might seem silly that Miles and his family were spared due to a hamburger, but Molecule Man was deeply grateful for the gesture from Spider-Man. Miles’ original home might have disappeared, but in the end, both he and his family were able to continue on all because he showed compassion to a powerful villain.

Ultimately, Miles would begin a new life on Earth-616 as he would team-up with Parker’s Spider-Man in what would become a beautiful friendship. He would return to his former universe, but in current continuity, he’s still a part of Marvel’s Prime Earth. It’s certainly possible that Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2 could deal with Miles Morales universe crumbling and eventually being forced to join Earth-616 – but whether a hamburger is a catalyst remains to be seen.
