Mothra could be the solution to the MonsterVerse’s Skull Island problem after Godzilla vs. Kong. It was revealed at the beginning of the movie that Kong’s home has fallen victim to a powerful storm that had left it uninhabitable, but Mothra could hold a key to potentially restoring Kong’s former home to its former glory.

Apparently, one of the storms created by Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters was drawn to Kong’s home sometime between the movie and the events of Godzilla vs. Kong. Once it latched onto the island, it didn’t go away. Instead, it lingered, and devastated Skull Island in the process. Most of the fauna and flora on the island were consequentially decimated, forcing Monarch to build a containment facility that protected Kong from the incessant storm. Because of the seemingly irreparable damage done to the island, Monarch had no choice but to move Kong off-site. Thankfully, they were able to relocate him to the land of his ancestors, the Hollow Earth world found beneath the Earth’s surface.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Hollow Earth is Kong’s new domain in the MonsterVerse, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the franchise is done with Skull Island. It’s certainly true that the island was left in dire straits by Godzilla vs. Kong, but it could be that a way exists for it to be rejuvenated. King of the Monsters revealed that Mothra possesses the ability to unleash waves of luminescent energy known as “god rays”. In the movie, Mothra surprised Monarch by appearing above the ocean in the middle of a raging storm caused by Ghidorah. Mothra’s god rays pierced through the storm clouds and lit up the entire area. All at once, the storm was dissipated by Mothra’s energy.

The fact that Mothra’s god rays can extinguish one of Ghidorah’s storms means that she could theoretically have the same effect on the one that’s ravaging the monster-infested Skull Island. If and when the Mothra larvae in the egg from the King of the Monsters’ credits emerge and metamorphizes, it’ll be possible for her to clear up the clouds hovering above the island. Hopefully, it won’t be too late for the island’s environment to recover and get back to the thriving, beautiful ecosystem that it was before Ghidorah came around.

Mothra saving Skull Island may not have much of an impact on Kong since he already has a new home, but the MonsterVerse going in this direction after Godzilla vs. Kong could have other, positive repercussions. The movies can keep the island relevant to the MonsterVerse’s future by having both existing and new Titans settle there. As the location of a major Hollow Earth entry point, it feels like the ideal choice to be this world’s answer to Monster Island from Toho’s movies. Similar to how Monster Island functioned in the Godzilla franchise, it could become the home to numerous benevolent Titans capable of co-existing with one another.
