Director Nia DaCosta breaks down how she decided Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel would fit into the upcoming MCU movie The Marvels. As the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, The Marvels will pick up with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Little is known about the plot for the new movie, but Larson confirmed in August that production on The Marvels is underway. The film was initially scheduled for release in November 2022, but the recent reshuffling of Marvel’s release dates moved it to February 2023.

For The Marvels, DaCosta is assembling an impressive superhero team. In addition to featuring Captain Marvel, the sequel will see the big screen debuts of two women who first arrived in the MCU via Disney+ shows: Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). Monica played a vital role in WandaVision earlier this year and ended the series with some intriguing superpowers. Meanwhile, Ms. Marvel’s self-titled show was originally expected to roll out this year, but it has since been bumped to early 2022.

The prospect of building a story around not one but three immensely powerful heroes sounds both exciting and daunting. A lot of things have to be taken into consideration, as DaCosta revealed in a recent interview with Roxane Gay for Inverse. The director, who recently made box office history with her Candyman reboot, explained how Monica and Ms. Marvel will both fit into Captain Marvel 2:

It’s interesting, and something we thought about and worked through a lot, which was how do we get each of these really big, exciting heroes space in a two-hour film? Captain Marvel has a history from the first film, Kamala will have her Miss Marvel show, and Monica Rambeau, we’ve only seen her a little bit in WandaVision. A lot of what we’ve been thinking about is what part of the journey do we need to see for each of them? How do we honor the part of the story they’re at in terms of the canon, while also within our story making them equal?

When the sequel was merely known as Captain Marvel 2, it looked like the movie would just be centered on Carol while featuring some exciting supporting players. The title change to The Marvels now hints it’ll be more of a team effort, with Monica and Ms. Marvel taking on essential roles. All three women will be at vastly different places when The Marvels begins, and DaCosta has already taken that into account when devising their arcs. It’ll be interesting to see how Carol, Monica, and Kamala all come to be equals despite being so different.

With work on The Marvels ongoing, it remains to be seen when more updates regarding its plot and characters could emerge. In addition to the previously mentioned leading ladies, the cast includes the returning Samuel L. Jackson and newcomers Park Seo-joon and Zawe Ashton in unnamed roles; the only thing that’s clear so far is that Ashton is playing the villain. Sadly, now that The Marvels has been pushed back to 2023, the wait just got much longer than expected, which means Marvel might continue to keep these details under lock and key for an extended period of time. Nevertheless, it sounds like DaCosta has a good grasp on things, and it should be a movie that’s well worth the wait.
