It’s no secret that Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the best selling games of all time, which can be partly attributed to the success of Grand Theft Auto Online, which, as it turns out, makes a tremendous amount of money per minute. Both are now so beloved that they’ve been able to last three console generations, from the PS3/Xbox 360 all the way to the PS5/Xbox Series X. Altogether, Grand Theft Auto 5 (and, by association, Grand Theft Auto Online) have sold over 150 million copies, whereas the entire Grand Theft Auto franchise alone has sold around 350 million, making Grand Theft Auto 5 responsible for a little under 50% of the series’ entire sales.

That’s just for base copies of the game, however. What’s a little bit more difficult to quantify is how much money GTA Online‘s store makes, which is arguably where a bulk of the proceeds come from. Full of activities, GTA Online offers a rather comprehensive world in which players can buy cars, purchase apartments, make money, steal helicopters and participate in events, as well as a host of other miscellaneous things like playing golf and watching short films.

Fortunately, NetBet was curious about the funds GTA Online pulls in and searched through 24 months of data to create a webpage displaying how much money a handful of top grossing games make, including other titles like Fortnite, League of Legends and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

How Much GTA Online Makes Per Minute

According to the NetBet website, GTA 5/GTA Online earned around $911 million in USD over the past 12 months, which is an outstanding feat by itself. Breaking that down even further, however, shows how successful the game truly is, and why it’s about to be released for a third console generation.

Essentially, if GTA Online is garnering $911 million a year, that’s around $2.5 million a day ($2,502,747 a day, to be exact) and $104,281 an hour. Chopping that hour up into even smaller pieces means that GTA Online brings in around $1,738 a minute.

With a rate of over $100,000 an hour, it’s no wonder Grand Theft Auto 5 is about to make a comeback when it releases for a third time next March on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and it definitely explains why PlayStation is including a promotion allowing players to receive $1 million a month in GTA bucks leading up to launch. What better way to entice players to jump back in (or to pick up the game for the first time) to keep earning that almost $2,000 an hour than to offer them free in-game money as an incentive? Grand Theft Auto Online is truly a sight to behold and doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon, even if Grand Theft Auto 6 finally comes out.
