Starlink internet is more expensive than most traditional internet providers and the higher cost is not only for the monthly rate, but also when getting started as well. Therefore, it is worth those considering signing up for the space-based service to consider how much they will be financially committing to before placing an order.

SpaceX’s Starlink internet program is still in a beta status and while that beta has been pretty limited in the past, that’s now changed. Starlink recently opened up the option for anyone in the U.S., Canada, and the UK to register their interest in the service and place a pre-order. However, unlike typical pre-orders, placing one with Starlink does not automatically guarantee access to the internet service when it becomes available in the area.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Starlink internet costs $99 per month and SpaceX requires a $99 deposit to be paid when placing the initial service order. Generally speaking, this is higher than internet packages from many traditional providers. While some companies do charge up to and beyond $100 per month just for internet, those plans are usually for gigabit internet. Starlink does plan to offer up to 10Gbps download speeds in the future, but it currently doesn’t. As a result, the $99 per month cost is likely to be more expensive than what many U.S. residents need to pay to existing providers in their area for a comparable internet plan.

Getting Started Also Costs More

Besides the $99 per month running cost for the internet, Starlink comes with some fairly high startup costs. The Starlink kit costs $499, and this includes the actual Starlink antenna, a Wi-Fi router, power supply, cables, and a mounting tripod. However, that price does not include shipping or taxes. Depending on the user’s location, they should expect to pay up to $600 before their Starlink kit is delivered. Technically, they may only end up paying up to $500 once the Starlink Kit is ready to ship, due to the $99 deposit that was paid when first placing the original order.

Overall, Starlink internet is not the cheapest option around and Elon Musk has previously suggested that lowering the cost might prove to be an issue in the future. Therefore, consumers will want to weigh up the benefits and limitations of what Starlink is offering before placing an order, including the possibility that the monthly cost could increase later on. In addition, interested consumers might also want to make sure they are able to meet the additional requirements that could impact on the experience, such as Starlink’s need for a clear view of the sky to ensure the best possible internet signal.
