Warning! This article contains major spoilers for Dexter: New Blood.

With the season finale of Dexter: New Blood now well and fully sunk in, there could be a way forward for Showtime’s new series to continue with a second season without its eponymous main character. While New Blood’s ending is arguably even more divisive than Dexter’s eighth season, Showtime has a real chance to give the newly established show a proper continuation thanks to some good set-up that the writers pull off in the closing of Dexter’s chapter.

Though the final episode of New Blood’s first season sees everyone’s favorite serial killer Dexter finally come to terms with the consequences of his collective actions – and meet his undoing at the hands of none other than his own son – there is plenty of material for the writers to explore in the future beyond Dexter’s own life. New Blood certainly seems acutely aware of this, and makes sure to set up a new path forward during its final episode.

As Dexter is shot by his son Harrison, who may have known that Dexter was a killer all along, New Blood’s season comes to an interesting conclusion as the show is left without its protagonist. In the closing minutes of the season finale, Harrison is seen fleeing Iron Lake in his dad’s pickup truck as The National’s “I Should Live in Salt” plays an emotional dirge to Dexter’s passing. With Angela’s support, who presumably sees to it that Harrison isn’t pursued by the authorities in relation to Dexter’s death, Harrison is given a clean slate and a way to move on from Iron Lake and either forsake or continue his father’s legacy.

These are two paths that New Blood could easily take with Harrison in the future. With the season finale seeming to prove that Dexter was wrong about Harrison having the same penchant for cold-blooded murder as him, New Blood might attempt a bold way forward by having Harrison reject his father’s teachings and find another way to deal with his own Dark Passenger. This would certainly be a departure from what Dexter and New Blood have been about for so long — namely, serial killing in the name of good — but it could be a good choice for Showtime to find a way to continue with the universe while also making sure not to just retread its steps with a new face and a new name.

Of course, Dexter’s son continuing his legacy and becoming a vigilante killer in his own right would be the other, more obvious way that New Blood could feasibly continue in the same vein that the original Dexter series unfolded. Part of the reason why New Blood kills off Dexter could likely be because it perfectly sets up Harrison moving on, settling into a new location, and finding a way to blend in while partaking in some extracurricular murder. Whichever way Showtime might choose to carry on with New Blood and Harrison as the protagonist, there is plenty of material to work with and avenues to take the show in.
