The newest entry into the Jurassic Park franchise will bring back the original paleontologist and paleobotanist, but how old are Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler in Jurassic World: Dominion? Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) were introduced in the first film, but both characters sat out for The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Dr. Grant returned in Jurassic Park III, and Dr. Sattler made a brief cameo as well. However, while Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) had a cameo in Fallen Kingdom, neither Sattler nor Grant have appeared in the Jurassic World semi-reboot franchise. Dominion is about to change that by calling upon all three of the doctors once again.

The franchise plans to capitalize on the nostalgia for the original movie’s magic by having Jurassic World 3 bring back Grant and Sattler. Now that dinosaurs live amongst humans after the formerly extinct creatures were released in Jurassic World 2, it makes sense that the paleo experts will make their return in 2022. Because the pair hasn’t been seen in the films since 2001, audiences are curious about how old Sam Neill and Laura Dern’s characters are. Here’s an explanation of Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler’s ages in Jurassic World: Dominion.

The films have never stated the exact ages for Grant and Sattler. However, the script for 1993’s Jurassic Park gives viewers hints about when they were born (via Studio Binder). The character of Dr. Grant was described as “a ragged-looking guy” who is in his “mid-thirties.” If mid-thirties is taken to mean between 34 and 36, then he was born sometime between the years 1957 and 1959. The upcoming film takes place in 2022. Therefore, Dr. Grant is between 63 and 65 years old in Jurassic World 3. Dr. Sattler was labeled as an “athletic-looking” woman in her “late twenties” in the script. Late twenties puts her age between 27-29 in the first movie, so she was born between 1964 and 1966. This means that Dr. Sattler is between 56 and 58 years old in Dominion.

Dr. Malcolm didn’t return for Jurassic Park 3 like Grant and Sattler, but he was seen more recently than the others in Fallen Kingdom. Nonetheless, even though his last appearance was just four years ago, viewers are still curious about how old the mathematician is now. Described in the original script as “forty-ish,” Dr. Malcolm is now 69-ish in the third Jurassic World.

Although Dominion is set to conclude the follow-up trilogy as the final Jurassic World movie, many viewers have speculated about another potential relaunch of the franchise after the producers of the Jurassic World movies openly floated the idea. However, “the end of the Jurassic era” was promised in the Jurassic World: Dominion trailer, so while another rebrand is possible, it would happen without the original trio. Dr. Grant, Dr. Sattler, and Dr. Malcolm will be returning for the last time in Jurassic World: Dominion, so viewers should get ready to wave goodbye to the beloved characters this summer.
