The anticipated trailer for God of War Ragnarök was finally released during the PlayStation Showcase 2021. The trailer revealed an older Atreus on another adventure with Kratos, seeking answers to questions presented at the end of God of War (2018). Despite not having any confirmation on how many years had passed since the previous game, the lore of Norse mythology can be used to reveal how old Atreus is in the upcoming God of War sequel.

Atreus is the son of Kratos in God of War and during the events of the previous game, Atreus and his father traveled throughout the Norse realms to fulfill his mother’s dying wish. Faye, later revealed as Laufey, was a Frost Giant and the second wife of Kratos. As Atreus and Kratos set out on a journey to scatter Faye’s ashes at the highest peak of all the realms, Atreus learns about his Greek ancestry. Continuing his journey in Ragnarök, the new trailer revealed Atreus seeking answers to his Norse lineage.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In God of War (2018), Atreus was about eleven years old according to the game’s official novelization by J.M Barlog. The story of God of War Ragnarök will take place approximately three years after the previous game, which means Atreus will be around fourteen years old in the new gameThe upcoming catastrophe, known as Ragnarok, which is the prophesized destruction of the Nine Realms in Norse mythology, will be an important event in the sequel game.

God of War Fimbulwinter, The Prophesized Winter Before Ragnarok

During the God of War Ragnarök trailer, Atreus had mentioned that Fimbulwinter will lead to Ragnarok. Fimbulwinter is the foretold winter event that will take place for three years before the start of Ragnarok. During this winter event, heavy snow will fall and strong blizzard storms will occur on a regular basis. In God of War, after defeating Baldur (who is the Norse God of Light), Mimir mentions that Fimbulwinter is about to begin. After explaining the apocalyptic event that will occur to Kratos, the blacksmith Brok also mentions the start of the prophesized winter while working with his brother Sindri.

In the post-credits ending cutscene of God of War, Thor appears in Atreus’ dream. In his vision, Thor confronted him and Kratos during the end of Fimbulwinter. In God of War Ragnarök, Thor will play an important role in the game, confirming that Atreus’ dream will come to pass and that Fimbulwinter has ended. Atreus’ relationship with Kratos will no doubt be different now that he is a teenager, but the emotional connection he has with his father is what makes the game exciting.
