The Mandalorian has added a new layer of backstory to the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but how old would Din Djarin, Baby Yoda and other characters be during the Skywalker Saga’s final installment, Star Wars: The Rise of SkywalkerThe Mandalorian‘s story begins in 9 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin, the climactic event of Star Wars: A New Hope) which puts it five years after the events of Return of the Jedi.

The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker are separated by 26 years, since Rise of Skywalker begins in 35 ABY. It’s unclear yet how The Mandalorian‘s characters spent the years leading up to Palpatine’s return (the upcoming Star Wars series may add more information to the timeline), but it’s likely that they lived long enough to see both the rise and fall of the First Order.

Although the actions of particular characters in the years between are unknown, The Mandalorian’s background plot is moving inexorably toward Rise of Skywalker. Din Djarin’s adventures with Grogu have already set the stage for the creation of the First Order and the return of Palpatine, so assuming The Mandalorian’s characters are still alive, they could be involved in the events leading up to the sequel trilogy in both large and small ways. Here’s a guide to how old The Mandalorian’s characters would be by the time Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker begins.

Din Djarin

Din Djarin is an established bounty hunter by the time the series begins. Flashbacks place him at Aq Verona during childhood, where he was orphaned and taken in by the Mandalorian faction Children of the Watch during a battle of the Clone Wars. The Clone Wars ended 19 years before the Battle of Yavin, and Djarin was already a child of at least five or six years old during the battle. This places Djarin in his thirties during the events of The Mandalorian. By the time of Rise of Skywalker, everyone’s favorite space dad would be near sixty years old.

Grogu

Although Grogu still seems to be a mostly helpless child, he is fifty years old when Djarin finds him, as revealed in the pilot episode when the bounty hunter first receives information on his quarry. Grogu and Yoda’s species age slowly, a process which allowed Yoda to live to be 900 years old. Grogu would be 76 years old in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but it’s unlikely those decades would have meant much for his development at his glacial pace of aging.

Cara Dune

Cara Dune’s backstory is tied to one of Star Wars’ greatest tragedies: the destruction of Alderaan. After her homeworld was wiped out she served as a shock trooper, mostly after the Battle of Endor. Dune was likely an adult at the time of Alderaan’s destruction, just before the Battle of Yavin, given that she was off-world and joined the rebels shortly after.

Depending on her age at the time, she is at least in her late twenties during the Mandalorian, though she may be closer to actress Gina Carano’s age of 38. Like Djarin, she would be in her fifties or sixties during The Rise of Skywalker. Her current role of Marshall of the New Republic would have disappeared when the First Order came to power, but there’s plenty of other action that could await Dune in the time of the sequels.

Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka Tano’s early years are well-documented in The Clone Wars series, placing her birth pretty firmly at 36 years before the Battle of Yavin. Ahsoka has been through a lot in her lifetime, but she’s only 45 years old when she appears in The Mandalorian. In the sequel trilogy, she would be over 70 years old, but that doesn’t mean she would have aged out of the action, especially for a Jedi. She still has plenty of years ahead of her to explore in the upcoming Ahsoka spinoff series.

Boba Fett

Boba Fett’s early life with Jango Fett and Jango’s death at the beginning of the Clone Wars establishes a clear timeline his life. Boba was 10 years old when Jango Fett died, meaning he was born 32 years before the Battle of Yavin. Like Ahsoka, he is in his early forties when he appears in The Mandalorian, though his actor Temuera Morrison is currently 60. During the final movie, Boba Fett would be 67.

Unlike the clone troopers, Boba Fett was created without accelerated aging, so he would have a normal human lifespan. If he survived the events of the intervening years, it’s highly likely he could still be active during the sequel trilogy. And if the action leading into The Book of Boba Fett is any indication, he would have made good use out of those decades.

Greef Karga

Little is known of Greef Karga’s earlier life to tie him to other events in the Star Wars universe. He was a disgraced magistrate who then became an agent for the Bounty Hunters’ Guild, but that’s not enough to link him to any specific years. Carl Weathers, who portrays Karga, is 73. Karga may be in his seventies, or like Boba Fett, the character could be a decade or two younger than the actor. Presuming a possible range of twenty years on his age, Karga would be at minimum in his seventies and at maximum almost 100 during Rise of Skywalker.

Moff Gideon

Moff Gideon has a clear past in the Galactic Empire, but his story outside of events established in The Mandalorian is nebulous. He was in the Imperial Security Bureau and participated in the Great Purge of Mandalore, and he likely had a long career in the Empire to gain the rank of moff. However, similar to Greef Karga, the best indication of his age so far is actor Giancarlo Esposito’s age of 62. Gideon may be younger, as the date of the Great Purge and the rest of his actions prior to the show are currently unknown. Assuming Gideon is somewhere between 50 and 70, he would be in his seventies or eighties by the time Palpatine returns – but only if he manages to survive through all of the years between.

Bo-Katan Kryze

Bo-Katan Kryze has a long history in The Clone Wars and Rebels, having joined the Death Watch faction of the Mandalorians around 20 years before the Battle of Yavin. Since she was already an adult at the time, she would be at minimum almost 50 years old by the time she appears in The Mandalorian. She’s had an action-packed and often tragic journey in the years since her first appearance on The Clone Wars, including losing the Dark Saber to Moff Gideon. Bo-Katan would be at least in her mid-seventies during the sequel trilogy, but she’s sure to have plenty of action to fill that time with her prominent links to the upcoming events of The Mandalorian and possibly series beyond.
