Star Trek: Picard star, Isa Briones, says that her character Soji will be very different in season 2. In Star Trek: Picard season 1, Soji’s identity and history were one of the big overarching mysteries of the series. As the season wrapped it was revealed that she was, alongside her deceased sister Dahj, an android with an organic body who was created as a daughter of Data (Brent Spiner).

Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard ended with Soji joining Picard and his crew on the La Sirena ship. Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard is set to premiere in February 2022 and will consist of ten episodes, as did season 1. Star Trek: Picard season 2 will see the return of fan-favorite character, Q, and a time travel story heavily inspired by Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. With those various plot elements in the air, it was unclear exactly where Soji’s place in the series was and if she would have less of a focus in the upcoming season given she was the primary focus of season 1, and this would allow other characters to be more front and center.

It appears that Soji will still have a major presence in the series, as in an interview with Trekmovies.com, Briones revealed that her character will continue to grow and evolve in the upcoming season. Soji will be allowed to express herself more, given that the ban on synthetics has been lifted in the series. Her interactions with the various members of the crew will also help her undergo a character evolution. Read what Briones said below:

“We’re definitely seeing a new kind of level of her evolution as she’s coming into her own. She’s finally allowed to be who she is and be accepted by the universe, the galaxy, whatever you want to call it. So yeah, we get to see her in this new, more certain place of who she is. And that’s very exciting…All around we’ve got these amazing badass women in our show. And so being the young one, I really hope to see a mirroring kind of evolution that you would see in any young woman coming into her own, realizing she has a voice, realizing she can speak up for herself and speak up for others. So I would really love to see Soji continue on that path.”

When Soji was introduced in Star Trek: Picard, she was working aboard a Borg ship alongside the Romulans to help victims of the Borg. Given the presence of a new Borg Queen in Star Trek: Picard season 2, there are a lot of areas to explore between her and Soji. Soji’s history working with Borg victims, the fact that both are synthenic organisms, and even the recent revelation from Star Trek: First Contact director, Jonathan Franks, that Data and The Borg Queen were intimate, there is a lot of drama ahead.

Star Trek: Picard was the first piece of new Star Trek media to explore the Prime Timeline after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis since 2002. The future was a much bleaker place than many expected but ended on an optimistic hope with the ban on synthetics lifted. Soji’s status could be a game-changer for the entire franchise and what it means for the synthetics moving forward. Evolution has always been a major staple of the Star Trek franchise, and Soji could be the link to an entirely new species and new storylines to explore.
