Soul has many references to other Pixar movies, and as per tradition, it also has an Easter egg that teases the studio’s next movie – here’s what it is. Pixar has become the biggest name in the world of animation thanks to its quality, attention to detail, characters, and stories, and has kept a solid fanbase since its first movie, Toy Story, came out in 1995. As years have passed, Pixar has explored more complex themes and issues in its stories, and its newest adventure, Soul, took a more philosophical road with jazz music as a companion.

Soul follows Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), a middle school music teacher who just as he books his biggest gig as a jazz musician, falls down a manhole and his soul ends up in the “Great Beyond”, but after resisting to go towards the light, he finds himself in the “Great Before”. There he meets soul counselors and a lot of young souls training to go to Earth, among those 22 (Tina Fey), who has spent a lot of time in the Great Beyond as she doesn’t want to go to Earth. Soul explores the concepts of the afterlife, pre-existence, and finding one’s true purpose and passion, and following the tradition of Pixar movies, it includes various Easter eggs and references to previous movies, as well as one teasing Pixar’s next project.

Since Monsters Inc in 2013, Pixar has been including at least one Easter egg in each movie that teases the next one, and most can be difficult to find as they don’t make much sense until the movie is out, prompting viewers to rewatch the previous movie. These Easter eggs can be pretty much anything and be as hidden or in-your-face as the Pixar crew decides, as was the Nemo toy in Monsters Inc and the Pegasus at the top of a bouncy castle in Toy Story 4. Onward teased Soul through a Dorothea Williams album found at the Lightfoot’s home, and Soul’s tease of Pixar’s next movie, Luca, can be found in one of the trailers.

Directed by Enrico Casarosa, Luca is set in his native Italy and follows the title character’s summer adventures with his new best friend, Alberto, who is a sea monster from another world below the surface of the water. Aside from that, not much is known about the movie, but it’s enough for viewers to spot the Luca tease in Soul, which appears in one of the scenes included in the final trailer. When Joe (moved by 22, as Joe’s soul was in Mr. Mittens) is walking down the streets of New York City, he passes by a travel agency with a poster that reads “Visit Portorosso”, with a setting very similar to the Italian Riviera, and below it seems to read “Fly Luca Airlines”. PixarPost noted that an eagle-eyed user spotted a copyright claim Pixar filed in June that included the words “Luca Portorosso, Isola del Mare, The Piazza”, so the poster could very well be the studio’s sneaky way of teasing its next project.

While many might argue that these teases just get harder and harder to find, they are still a delight for Pixar fans who continue to be fascinated by the amount of detail that the crews behind these movies put into them. The Luca tease in Soul is not that hard to find or understand, and is one of the easiest ones to spot, as opposed to the Cars tease in The Incredibles and the WALL-E one in Ratatouille, just to name some that were too hidden or ambiguous.
