One of SpongeBob SquarePants’ running gags is how he’s unable to get his driver’s license, so he spends years at Mrs. Puff’s Boating School trying and failing to obtain it, but there have been a couple of times where he got it – and lost it not long after. SpongeBob SquarePants has become the most successful Nicktoon to date, while also being one of the longest-running American animated series. SpongeBob and friends have been around since 1999, and some of the earliest jokes on the show are still going to this day, among those that of SpongeBob’s driver’s license.

SpongeBob SquarePants follows the daily adventures of the title character alongside his best friends Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, his neighbor Squidward Tentacles, and his boss Mr. Krabs, among many other colorful characters from Bikini Bottom. The series has shown SpongeBob at work, with his family, working out (or trying to), and even on land, but one of the most common scenarios for him is Mrs. Puff’s Boating School, which he attends regularly as he just can’t get his driver’s license.

Much to Mrs. Puff’s dismay, SpongeBob is quite persevering, and he won’t stop attending her classes until he’s finally legally able to drive. As it turns out, he has gotten his driver’s license a couple times, but not for long.

How SpongeBob SquarePants Keeps Losing His Driver’s License

Mrs. Puff has been dealing with SpongeBob for years, so it’s understandable that she’s constantly annoyed by his presence, and it once got so bad she decided to give him his driver’s license even though he didn’t actually pass, just so she could get rid of him. This was season 2’s episode “No Free Rides”, and SpongeBob’s parents were so proud they bought him a new boatmobile. Overcome with guilt, Mrs. Puff stole the boat, but SpongeBob tried to stop her and they crashed the boat. Mrs. Puff was taken to jail and SpongeBob’s license was revoked.

Season 9’s episode “SpongeBob LongPants” also saw SpongeBob getting his license, though for less exciting reasons. After buying long pants, his personality changed and was treated better by others, and this new confidence prompted him to take the driver’s test, with the instructor giving him the license just because he was wearing long pants. At the end of the episode, the instructor appeared and ripped the license as SpongeBob was not wearing long pants anymore. The last time SpongeBob’s driver’s license appeared was in season 11’s episode “Girl’s Night Out”, where Sandy, Karen, and Mrs. Puff pranked him by making him believe he got it through a virtual reality headset. SpongeBob’s inability to drive will continue to be one of the series’ biggest running gags, so don’t expect him to get his license for real anytime soon.
