The Umbrella Academy season 1 saw the title team fight Temps agents Cha Cha and Hazel, but the latter seemed too strong as he could fight some of the team’s strongest members without a problem, so how strong was he? The current popularity of the superhero genre has also made it possible for lesser-known and sometimes darker stories to branch out to other media, and among those is The Umbrella Academy, a comic book series created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. The Umbrella Academy made the jump to the world of streaming in February 2019 thanks to Netflix, and it became one of the platform’s most popular shows.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Umbrella Academy tells the story of the Hargreeves, seven adopted siblings who along with other 36 babies around the world, were born on the same day, at the same time, and under the same mysterious circumstances. This event caught the attention of scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who set out to adopt as many of those babies as he could but only got seven. As the kids developed unique superpowers, Reginald trained them and formed the team “The Umbrella Academy”, and together they fought different types of threats. The Hargreeves parted ways as years passed and reunited years later for Reginald’s funeral and to stop the fast-approaching apocalypse, but that wasn’t the only problem they had to deal with, as there were two agents from The Commission going after Five (Aidan Gallagher) and later the rest of the team.

The Commission is an organization that oversees and manages the space-time continuum, with the purpose of ensuring that all events that are supposed to happen do so as they should. The Commission has agents ready to travel through time to eliminate all threats and thus make sure the timeline remains untouched, and The Umbrella Academy season 1 introduced two agents: Cha Cha (Mary J. Blige) and Hazel (Cameron Britton), who were assigned to prevent Five from stopping the apocalypse. At one point in season 1, Cha Cha and Hazel arrived at the Hargreeves’ mansion to attack them, and Hazel was able to go toe to toe with Luther (Tom Hopper), the Umbrella Academy’s strongest member, raising the question of how strong Hazel is and how he was able to fight Luther and the rest.

Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy hasn’t had enough time to explore The Commission and everything they can do, but the comics have. The Commission has advanced technology and its agents go through intense training, turning them into professional hitmen and skilled combatants. In addition to that, The Handler (Kate Walsh) mentioned in the series that they had the technology to alter Five’s body, so it’s generally understood that the agents can go through some processes to enhance their abilities. Hazel, then, in addition to being trained to be an assassin and a fighter, might have gone through some unspecified process that enhanced his endurance, stamina, and quite possibly his healing factor as well, as he was stabbed by one of Diego’s knives and simply shrugged it off.

However, some fans of The Umbrella Academy argue that Luther might not be as strong as he seems, allowing Hazel to fight him without much problem, but even if that was the case, Hazel’s abilities were quite impressive for a supposedly “regular” man (as in, a man with no superpowers like the Hargreeves). With Hazel now gone as he was killed in the first minutes of The Umbrella Academy season 2, viewers might not get to see him in action anymore, but future seasons can still explore what exactly happens at The Commission and what they do to their agents.
