Tammy And The T-Rex’s “Gore Cut” transformed a 1990s oddity into a true cult classic. The huge success of 1993’s Jurassic Park led to a glut of low-budget horror movies looking to cash in on the movie’s success, including Roger Corman’s Carnosaur series, Prehysteria! and Whoopi Goldberg’s Theodore Rex. While the previously mentioned films were all weird in their own way, the strangest still has to be Tammy And The T-Rex from 1994.

Tammy And The T-Rex stars a pre-fame Paul Walker (The Fast & The Furious) and Denise Richards as high-school couple Michael and Tammy. Michael is attacked by Tammy’s jealous and possessive ex, and after he’s mauled by a panther – long story – an unethical scientist transplants his brain into a mechanical T-rex. Michael awakens in his new body less than pleased and takes revenge on the bullies and scientists who killed him while reconnecting with Tammy in his new form.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Tammy And The T-Rex came to be because the director Stewart Raffill (Mac And Me) was offered the chance to use an animatronic T-Rex, but a movie had to be quickly assembled around this dinosaur as the timeframe to use it was limited. The film was made very much with tongue-in-cheek and its loaded with bizarre sequences and comedy, such as a standoff where Michael and Tammy’s ex squeeze each others testicles for a really long time. The concept alone was enough for it to find a cult in its original PG-13 form, but Raffill shot a hard R movie that the producer later chopped up to be family-friendly.

This was evident in Tammy And The T-Rex’s original version, which featured some jarring cuts to hide gore. Notable bits of bloodshed include the T-Rex biting off heads or disemboweling a bully. Cult film distributor Vinegar Syndrome eventually got a hold of the fabled “Gore Cut” – which was then titled Tanny And The T-Rex – and it became a cult favorite thanks to various screenings. The movie is now available for horror fans to enjoy on streaming service Shudder.

While Tammy And The T-Rex is the dictionary definition of a bad movie, it’s also a relentless entertaining one in it’s R-rated form. The gore is pretty creative and it fully embraces its own sense of camp; plus the sight of the T-Rex holding a phone with an obvious human hand in a rubber glove will never not be entertaining. Just like it took Blade Runner years to be appreciated until the director’s cut came along, it wasn’t until Tammy And The T-Rex’s “Gore Cut” landed that the movie could really get its due – though Ridley Scott probably wouldn’t like this comparison.
