Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige, explains how Venom 2‘s shocking post-credits scene came to be. Released earlier this month, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is the sequel to the 2018 surprise box office hit that introduced Tom Hardy as the journalist Eddie Brock who becomes host to the alien symbiote known as Venom. The sequel picks up right where the previous film’s post-credits scene left off, as Brock prepares to interview the imprisoned serial killer known as Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson).

Venom: Let There Be Carnage sees Kasady become host the to latter titular symbiote and break free from prison to reunite with his love interest, Frances Barrison aka Shriek (Naomie Harris), who can manipulate sound energy with her screams, an unfortunate foe for Venom who is sensitive to loud noises. Just like its predecessor, Let There Be Carnage received mixed reviews from critics, but faired nicely at the box office. The film’s post-credits scene has also had fans speculating fervently about the future of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and its potential ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Now, the MCU’s architect himself, Feige, has weighed in on Venom’s 2 much ballyhooed post-credits scene. Talking to THR at the Eternals premiere in Los Angeles, Feige says that the scene came together because of the cooperation between Sony and Marvel, confirming that the teams behind Venom 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Homeworked together on it.” Read what Feige had to say below:

There was a lot of coordination — and if you don’t know all the coordination yet, I’m not going to be the one to tell you — but yes, between Sony and Marvel and the Venom team and the No Way Home team. We worked together on it.

The coordination between the two studios is certainly notable since Sony’s Spider-Man universe and the Disney-owned MCU had remained separate up until the point that Venom 2‘s post-credits scene saw Eddie Brock transported to MCU where he watches J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) reveal Spider-Man’s (Tom Holland) identity on TV. The surprising scene set the stage for a meeting between the two comic book adversaries. However, it’s still unclear when that might happen.

While fans will likely take Feige’s quote as confirmation that Hardy’s Venom will be appearing in No Way Home, which releases on December 17, it might be best not to jump to conclusions quite yet. One prevalent theory has been that Venom will join the Sinister Six in the MCU, though Hardy’s version of the character hasn’t exactly been established as a villain. Instead, Venom 2‘s post-credits scene is likely setting up a team-up film focused solely on Hardy’s Venom and Holland’s Spider-Man, which could be the next Sony-Marvel collaboration coming after No Way Home.
