Managing cities throughout an empire is a staple of many 4X strategy games, and one of the ways players can do so in Humankind is by attaching one of their outposts to a nearby city. There are plenty of reasons why players would want one of their cities attached to an outpost. Upgrading outposts into full-blown cities not only costs a large sum of influence, but there’s a city capacity limit that dictates how many can be properly governed by the player.

By assigning an outpost to a designated city, players will be able to start building districts there, prior to enhancing it into a city. Furthermore, it allows leaders to claim nearby luxury and strategic resources for their people that would otherwise take longer to acquire. This means more goods to sell to other cultures and sooner access to military units that require a strategic resource to create.

In order to attach an outpost to a city in Humankind, there needs to be an outpost available. To accomplish this, send a military unit to unclaimed territory, and press the ‘Claim Territory’ button to set up an outpost in the desired location.

Attaching Outposts to Cities in Humankind

First, determine which Humankind city the player wants to attach the outpost to. Only those with territory near the outpost are able to attach it, so keep that in mind. Once the intended city has been clicked on, scroll the map over to the outpost in question. A big button with ‘attach’ will appear to the right of the outpost’s name, along with the amount of influence that’s required to attach it. Compared to the influence needed to turn it into a full-blown city, the cost is considerably less for attachment. Selecting the attach button will covert the outpost into an administrative center, providing it with more options for empire management.

With this newly formed administrative center, cities in Humankind will be able to build districts and claim resources inside the center’s adjacent tiles. However, the cost of running it will inflict relatively harsh stability penalties on the host city due to the influx of people they have to manage. Thankfully, the outpost is not permanently attached to the city forever. By clicking on the host city, a button with the option of detaching an administrative center will appear. With this, players can effectively reassign the outpost to another nearby city if the stability drop is too much for the host to handle.

Humankind is available for PC, Macintosh OS, and Stadia.
