Avery is the rival of Pokemon Shield. This guide will help players defeat this new rival in the Isle of Armor DLC. This marks the first time in the Pokemon series where a mainline title has received paid DLC. The Pokemon Sword & Shield expansion pass is splitting the DLC amongst two separate parts. The first part released in June, the Isle of Armor. The second part will be available in the Fall as the Crown Tundra. Both offer new story content, over 100 older Pokemon, and new wild areas. Older Pokemon like Emolga and Psyduck make an appearance in this DLC for the first time in the Galar region. This guide will help the player defeat Avery in Pokemon Shield.

Avery is the new rival introduced exclusively in Pokemon Shield. The Isle of Armor DLC is slightly different between Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. While Pokemon Sword comes along with Klara while Pokemon Shield has Avery. Although, both characters have similar teams for battle. Avery will clash with the player during their time participating in the Isle of Armor trials. Fortunately, if the player has built a powerful team from the base game, they should be able to defeat the rival around every turn. Here’s how players can defeat Avery in Pokemon Shield.

How To Beat Avery In Pokemon Shield

Avery is a Psychic-type trainer whose main Pokemon is a Galarian Slowpoke, a newly introduced Pokemon in Pokemon Sword & Shield expansion pass. Each of his Pokemon will be around level 60, around the base level of most Pokemon who beat the game at this point. Bring along a Dark-type Pokemon like Bisharp, Grimmsnarl, Hydreigon to easily sweep the rest of his team. The trainer will battle Avery three times during the DLC. None of these are particularly challenging. Defeating Avery (even when he cheats in the third battle) is a no brainer.

Pokemon Sword & Shield’s Isle of Armor is a fun revisit to the Galar region. The base game introduced the wild area to the series for the very first time. The Isle of Armor DLC introduces a new wild area with varied terrain that is much more vast than the original. Plus, this is the reintroduction of much older Pokemon that were unavailable in the original game. It was a huge deal to Pokemon fans when it was confirmed that several fan-favorites would be cut from the game. The expansion pass has confirmed over 200 older Pokemon returning back into the main game. It’s a huge deal for trainers who miss interacting with their favorite Pokemon.

Pokemon Sword is available now on the Nintendo Switch.
