The iPhone has plenty of options for managing email including blocking emails, removing the need for the user to keep deleting unwanted messages from spammers. As emails from abusive email accounts can be stopped before even opening Apple’s Mail app, this eases the burdensome task of clearing the inbox. Email blocking isn’t hard but the option isn’t as obvious as a block button.

A free iCloud email account is provided to each iPhone owner along with 5 gigabytes of storage for backing up an iPhone, syncing data between Apple devices, and storing files, photos, and videos. Of course, this can fill up quickly if storing all iPhone photos and videos. Apple doesn’t offer a way to pick which media files are backed up to the cloud, and as everything is kept at the original quality and full resolution, an iCloud+ subscription is often required. These are competitively priced and come with added benefits such as Private Relay and Hide My Email.

Apple makes it easy to block emails, once the user knows where to look. There’s isn’t an obvious button or menu to tap. Instead, the user needs to open an email that should be blocked, then tap the sender’s name to expand that section and tap again to open a window for that contact. The option to Block Contact appears about halfway down. Tapping this will add that sender to a block list and their emails will be prevented from reaching the user’s inbox. This keeps the inbox free from particularly annoying emails from persistent senders.

Report iPhone Email Spam

Spam emails, in other words, unsolicited advertisements that the user never subscribed to, are handled differently. Obviously, blocking spammers would be a full-time job and Apple doesn’t expect iPhone owners to block each spammer’s email address, especially as they typically have a vast number of email addresses to send from. Most spam is filtered automatically and Apple takes care of the details. However, some might be missed. To mark an email as spam, swipe to the left slowly to reveal the More button and tap it to see other options. Selecting Move to Junk will move it to that folder and report the email as spam to Apple. In the future, similar emails should be automatically added to Junk.

To avoid the need to block senders and move spam, Apple offers a feature called Hide My Email as part of an iCloud+ subscription. This feature creates unique and random iCloud email addresses and forwards mail to the user’s real address, making it easy to opt-out of a generated email address that is being overwhelmed with spam with a quick visit to the iCloud website. With automatic spam control and blocking, an iPhone owner might not need to use Hide My Email, but the feature is there and available with any iCloud+ subscription when needed.
