An iPhone has a name, and it’s not just the model number that Apple gave it, such as iPhone 13 mini, but rather a name that the owner can change. This is very helpful if there is more than one iPhone in a household, in school, or at work to be identified as different devices.

Apple provides a great incentive to own more than one of its products. The goal at Apple is to make products that inspire customers to say ‘it just works,’ and that is apparent with Apple’s Continuity features. When using AirPods with an iPhone then switching to a Mac, the pairing automatically switches to the other device. AirDrop is a super-fast and straightforward way to wirelessly transfer photos, videos and files from an iPhone to a Mac with a tap. Apple devices work best with other Apple devices.

When using some of Apple’s Continuity features, such as AirDrop, an iPhone’s name appears in the list of nearby devices. If the name hasn’t been changed, Apple will refer to it by the user’s first name followed by the product type. For example, a device name of ‘John’s iPhone’ might show on the device list. Since John is a common name, there could be more than one in an area, causing confusion about which iPhone belongs to the intended recipient. Changing the name prevents that issue. Of course, it’s also fun to customize it so others can AirDrop to the ‘USS Enterprise’ or ‘My Precious,’ as nods to favorite stories. This is easy to do by opening the Settings app then tapping the General tab at the left. In that section, tap the about ‘About’ option, and ‘Name’ should be the first field at the top. Tap that and type in whatever name sounds good.

It’s also possible to rename an iPad, and the process is the same. In fact, most Apple products can be called whatever the owner wants, making it a bit more personal and distinguishing one iPhone or iPad from another. The chosen name appears in the devices list of the Find My app, in AirDrop lists, Apple ID information, and other Continuity features. For an iPad, Sidecar and Universal Control identify an iPad by the user-selected name as well.

Names can also be changed anytime, providing an opportunity to support a good cause, cheer on a favorite team or make a political or social statement. Names are important, and it’s nice that Apple provided an option to customize an iPhone and iPad with a personal touch.
