The remake of Trials of Mana has been out for a few months, and while it has brought a nostalgic feeling of old school games, many players have found the role-playing game to lack some features. This month, the game has been updated to patch version 1.1.0 bringing with it many of the fan-requested quality of life changes. This includes resetting back to first level, higher difficulty settings, and brand new Chain Abilities.

Among one of the other big changes has been an improvement to the game’s costume system. Now, players can store outfits from any class and retain them even when switching to a completely different branch. This can be especially nice in the post-game, as some difficult optional bosses may need a completely different build to defeat. Previously, characters would forfeit their skins. But with a properly installed update characters can now stay fashionable without losing combat specializations.

Obtaining Costumes in Trials of Mana

While costumes are in the base version of Trials of Mana, they were always automatically discarded when resetting classes or moving on into New Game Plus. This mostly made them an afterthought feature. Now, patch 1.1.0 has expanded costumes by saving them at acquisition. This allows players the ability to collect and switch between them at their leisure. For example, Charlotte could dress as a Necromancer but actually be in her Sage class. However, the costume collection is not retroactive to older saves; a player won’t suddenly find skins for classes they changed out of before downloading the patch. In those cases, one may need to reclaim outfits by using class change items or progressing to the post-game content.

All class changes happen at either an elemental Mana Stone found in various dungeons or the special Goddess of Mana statue within the middle of the Sanctuary of Mana. Third class change items are gained from ??? seeds within Benevodon dungeons. What grows from these seeds is determined at acquisition, so there is little point in reloading while planting at an inn box. However, unplanted seeds are passed along to the corresponding New Game Plus party positions. For example, if a seed is always producing a Prince tag (Dark aligned item) for Knight Duran as companion number one, then when Hawkeye is made the next companion number one the same seed will now always make a Destiny Dice (his Dark item) when he is a Ranger. With this knowledge recorded, players can manipulate seeds to match their exact party needs.

Fourth class change items are gained from personal quests leading to Anise’s stronghold but are lost upon entering New Game Plus. One who wishes to get both Fourth class costumes may want to reset classes and re-advance before moving into their next playthrough.

Additionally, for save games created before patch 1.1.0 players can trigger costume acquisition with a Goddess Scale. This will place all of the older costumes into the wardrobe collection while resetting the chosen character back to their default class. Goddess Scales are rather rare, with Anise’s Stockade only having a few scattered around in various treasure chests.

While the costumes themselves may not be new, being able to hold on to them for future runs is a nice touch. This may be a perfect reason for owners to return to Trials of Mana and experience the next update.

Trials of Mana is available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
