Ghost of Tsushima has no shortage of crafting materials. Thankful, the game’s engine allows players to gather the resources they need very smoothly. Whether Jin is cruising by on horseback collecting flowers and bamboo, or sneaking through Mongol strongholds scavenging for iron and leather, there is no interruption in the flow of the game.

Unfortunately, Jin is unable to craft anything himself other than Haikus. He’ll have to rely on the handy crafters and traders of Tsushima to upgrade his gear and flaunt his style. These vendors can be found in every major city on the island. Some can also be found in various encampments and villages. This guide will walk players through gathering the materials required for upgrading Jin’s equipment in Ghost of Tsushima.

How to Craft in Ghost of Tsushima

First and foremost, players will need an abundance of supplies for every upgrade in the game (aside from trapper upgrades but we’ll get to that.) For example, the final upgrade to Jin’s Katana will require 1,000 supplies. Otherwise, players should have a relatively easy time accumulating the resources required for upgrades. So with three metric tons of supplies on his back, here is everything Jin will need for his upgrades.

Swords in Ghost of Tsushima

  • Jin’s Sakai Katana will require Supplies, Iron, Steel, and Gold to upgrade its damage output.
  • Jin’s Sakai Tanto (Dagger) will require Supplies and Iron.

Deciding on which to level up first depends on how players are playing their game. If one is going the route of “Assassin’s Creed: Tsushima”, then they’ll want to max out their Tanto for quick & quiet assassinations. However, if Jin is deciding to stick to his moral compass and simply challenge every Mongol he encounters to an honorable standoff, he’ll want to invest his resources into upgrading his Katana. The only difficult item to find here is gold, but pieces can be obtained by liberating Mongol Strongholds across Tsushima.

Armor in Ghost of Tsushima

Each armor upgrade (four in total) will add a different ingredient to the recipe. It will also change the overall appearance of the armor making Jin look even more badass than before (yes, it’s possible)

  • Level II – Supplies & Linen
  • Level III – Supplies, Linen & Leather
  • Level IV – Supplies, Linen, Leather & Silk

All of these resources are also easy to find other than Silk. Players must acquire silk as a quest reward for beating different tales of Tsushima. Upgrading one’s armor will come with different perks depending on the set. For example, Gosaku’s armor will see a massive increase to players health and stagger damage output when fully upgraded. It will also offer 20% health regeneration upon killing a staggered enemy.

Bows in Ghost of Tsushima

Jin will acquire two different bows for use on his journey, the Half Bow and Long Bow. Each offers different usage depending on the situation. In total, upgrading both bows will require Supplies, Bamboo, Yew Wood, and Wax Wood. All but Wax Wood can be found scattered around Tsushima. Players must hunt for Wax Wood near Shinto Shrines or get it as a quest reward.

The Long Bow is great for taking out Mongol Archers from a safe and well-hidden position. Players will want to use the half-bow at closer ranges, either stealthily or in the middle of heated combat. Either way, players should absolutely invest a few technique points into ‘Concentration’ in order to slow time and take well-placed shots.

Other Upgrades in Ghost of Tsushima

Aside from weapons and armor, Jin will still want to look good on his journey. Players will find Merchants in settlements and small encampments. They will trade armor dyes and vanity weapon designs in exchange for flowers. Players can even buy some fun hats and headbands in exchange for the flowers they nearly trampled.

Lastly, Trappers will increase Jin’s maximum carry capacity for his arrows and throwable weapons. They will require predator hides to do so which can be obtained by killing vicious wild bears, hungry Mongol dogs, and pigs. These upgrades come at a high price though. Maxing out Jin’s arrow capacity will require 20 Predator hides. It’s hard to imagine it taking 20 bear pelts to make a large quiver, but hey, Jin’s not the expert here.

Thankfully Jin has a reliable source of traders and vendors to upgrade his armor and appearance. Perhaps a future update will allow Jin to craft his on throwable weapons, but for now, players will have to find them the old fashion way.
