Fans of The Sims who have been with the franchise for a long time know that the game has always been about creating stories and simulating life. The Sims 4 had a rocky start, and players might remember that key features that had been present in previous Sims games, like the Toddler life state, pools, and terrain tools, were not available at launch. Over time and through months of updates, these features were added to enrich the experience of The Sims 4, including the most recent update that added over 100 new skin tones and makeup sliders. However, fans have been clamoring for one specific feature that had been previously available but is still missing from The Sims 4: bunk beds. Family players especially seem to want the option of having bunk beds for their children, both as a splash of personality and to give their Sims more space in smaller homes.

Some players have tried to use Custom Content to mod bunk beds into their game. Now, with the new platform tool in Build Mode, players can create their own bunk beds, or even build a loft bed with a desk underneath for their Discover University student Sim. There are several different ways to build a set of bunk beds using platforms, and players can choose what works best for them and for their Sims’ home. The general process for this will look the same regardless of the style or method players choose and will require them to turn on a few cheats. Here’s how to make functional bunk beds in The Sims 4 using the platform tool.

How to Create Bunk Beds in Sims 4

First, players will need to build or select the home and room in which they want to build their bunk bed. To accommodate both the stairs and the bed, they will need at least four tiles along the grid, but more will be better.

Then, players will need to be sure to turn cheats on. They can do this by pulling up the console using either Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or all four shoulder buttons on PlayStation or Xbox. Players should enter testingcheats true in the small text field at the top left of the screen to enable cheating.

Next, players will need to input bb.showhiddenobjects and press Enter or Done. This will allow players to access hidden or locked items in Build and Buy Mode that can be used to help create the bunk bed. Players can access more hidden items by entering the cheat bb.showliveeditobjects, then entering Build and Buy Mode and clicking the search icon without entering a search term.

Finally, players should input bb.moveobjects on to allow them to move the bed and its posts vertically and independently of the grid.

Players can then enter Build Mode and select the platform tool. They can add a platform of any height, as this will be raised after the platform is placed. While this build works best if the platform is against at least three walls, it is not required. Players should note that when they place the platform, the walls will inevitably disappear and need to be rebuilt. This is normal and expected. They can add the walls back in and continue the process.

With the platform built, players should click on it and grab the up arrow that appears to raise the platform by at least four clicks for a Child Sim. To prevent an adult or teen Sim’s head from clipping through the top bunk when the Sim sits up, the platform will need to be higher than this. At this point, Players can add flooring and wall covering if they want, or they can wait until the bed itself is built.

Next, players will need to enter Buy mode and select their beds and a post. Ideally, the posts should match the headboard or frame of the bed, though this isn’t necessarily a requirement. Players can find more posts in debug mode, which they enable through the input cheat codes. To find debug objects, players will need to enter debug in the Buy Mode search bar.

The first bed should go against the raised platform. Then, players can move the posts to the four corners of the bed. They will need to hold down Alt on PC, LB and RB on Xbox, or L1 and R1 on PlayStation to prevent the posts from snapping to the grid. Players will need to be patient and take their time, as the posts can be finicky and glitch, clip, or otherwise behave in ways players may not want.

One way to make this process smoother is to reduce the platform’s depth by one. This way, it will not touch the side of the bed. Players can add the posts, then return the platform where it belongs for easier installation. Players need to be careful with this trick as well, as sometimes moving the platform will delete anything in its way, including the posts.

For an added detail, players can raise the height of shorter posts to reach above the second bed. To do this, they should add a second post, adjust its height two clicks up using 9 and , and place it directly on top of the existing one. Posts can also be inserted about halfway into the wall to make them look more like a traditional two-by-four and less like part of a house’s foundation.

Finally, players will need to add the second bed on top of the platform. They will then need to use the Alt, LB and RB, or L1 and R1 buttons while moving the bed from the platform to rest over the first bed. Players will need to stop moving it before it snaps down onto the floor instead. While they can use the same height adjustment as was used with the posts, this makes it likely to glitch. Using bb.moveobjects and alt placement allows the bed to technically appear to be on the platform and will make it fully functional for a Sim to sleep in.

Players can continue to furnish the area, adding stairs against the platform or, if they have Eco Lifestyle, a ladder to help Sims get to the top bunk. It is also possible to remove the first bed and instead create a lofted workspace where the bottom bunk would be. The possibilities are virtually endless, and, until bunk beds are added to The Sims 4, this functional substitute still looks fantastic.

The Sims 4 is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
