Like most other instant messaging apps, Facebook Messenger also offers a dark mode, and it’s easy to enable it in the app and on the website. Part of the Meta family, along with Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, Messenger is one of the preeminent apps in its segment. According to Statista, it is the second-largest cross-platform messaging app globally after WhatsApp, with 1.3 billion monthly active users as of Oct. 2021.

Dark Mode is a popular feature across most apps on mobile and desktops. In fact, a system-wide dark mode option is also offered by most operating systems, including Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. As for Facebook Messenger, it offers the feature natively, enabling users to switch it on with or without OS-level support. This means the feature is also available on older versions of Android and iOS that do not offer a native dark mode.

The dark mode in Facebook Messenger changes the app’s background from stark white to complete black, which is much easier on the eye. As with any other application, it helps reduce glare from the mobile or desktop display and is especially helpful in low-light situations. For people not accustomed to using the dark mode, it can feel like a significant change at first, but once they get used to the new look, it quickly becomes evident that the dark mode on Facebook Messenger is less straining on the eyes, making the chats more enjoyable.
