Something fans look forward to with every new Pokémon generation are new type combinations. Each Pokémon can have one to two types, which determine their strengths and weaknesses. With Pokémon Sword & Shield, there is finally a dual Bug and Ice-type, Frosmoth. The wings of this giant moth Pokémon are below 0 degrees, and they can summon monstrous blizzards using their icy scales.

Frosmoth’s standout feature is it’s unique typing, along with its high special attack stat. With powerful moves like Blizzard and Bug Buzz and with a life-stealing move like Giga Drain, it has a solid place on any team as a special attacker. It can even learn Quiver Dance, a move that raises special attack, special defense, and speed, allowing it to set up if it’s given the opportunity too. Here’s a look at how to obtain Frosmoth in Pokémon Sword & Shield.

Finding Frosmoth in Pokémon Sword & Shield

Frosmoth can’t be found anywhere in the wild and can only be caught during Max Raid Battles. They have a chance to be a raid boss at Hammerlocke Hills, Stony Wilderness, and Giant’s Cap. Otherwise, players will need to catch their pre-evolved form, Snom, and evolve one. Snom are native to Route 8, Route 10, and the Lake of Outrage. They’re not particularly powerful either, knowing only Struggle Bug and Powder Snow by level up. Nothing they can do is threatening, so players should have no challenge catching a Snom. Just inflict a status condition and lower it’s health, and they’ll have their Snom in no time.

To evolve Snom into Frosmoth, players will need to maximize their friendship with it. This can be accomplished in several ways, the easiest of which is by giving a Snom the Soothe Bell item. When held, it increases all gains to friendship by 50%, expediting the process greatly. Players can find the Soothe Bell in Hammerlocke, in the house to the right of the central Pokémon center. Common ways to improve friendship are through leveling up and by interacting with it in the Pokémon camp. Considering how difficult it is to use Snom in battle, players will likely find it easier with the latter option. For those wondering how close they are to max friendship, there is an NPC in Sword & Shield that can help. There’s a kid, also in Hammerlocke city, who can track the level of friendship players have reached with their Pokémon. They’re in the same house as the girl who gifts the Soothe Bell. Are they siblings? Once the Snom has achieved maximum happiness, they need to level up at nighttime to evolve. After those conditions are met, players will have their Frosmoth!
