Terraria has added many new characters and enemies throughout its nearly decade long lifespan. Despite being present in the game for a long period of time, many players might have never seen Tim the Wizard. All Terraria NPCs and enemies have a spawn requirement, such as their location or having a certain item, and these skeletal warlocks can be hard to fulfill.

Those that manage to hunt down Tim and defeat him will obtain the There are Some Who Call Him… achievement as well as Tim’s fancy wizard hat. But what are his spawn conditions, and how can they be fulfilled? This guide will look at how to craft the special robe needed to find Tim quicker, how to find him, and a strategy to beat him.

How to Spawn Terraria’s Tim

Much like other enemies in Terraria, Tim will spawn into the world randomly. Unlike the slimes and zombies players will normally encounter, Tim appearing in the world is exceptionally rare. However, there is a method to improve his spawn rate that players searching for him will want to take advantage of. By crafting and equipping a robe, the chances of Tim appearing greatly approve. Acquiring this robe is a multi-step process, so here’s a rundown. To craft this robe, players will need silk and 10 of a specific gem, whether it be diamond or topaz it doesn’t matter. Players will need to do some exploring and mining to find all these materials, so those who already have put time into the game might already have these materials.

Speaking of necessary materials, Silk requires more steps than simply mining it out of a cave. It takes 7 cobwebs, which players can find sticking to cave walls. What makes crafting Silk tricky, is that a Loom is required to sew the web together. Much like how Work Benches are needed to build rudimentary objects like wooden walls and hammers, Looms are needed to craft more complex items that require silk. Looms themselves can only be built by using Sawmills, another crafting apparatus, which needs a chain to craft. Anvils are needed to make these chains, and iron bars are needed to craft them. So in summary, players need to craft an Anvil, a Sawmill, and a Loom in order to produce silk to craft the Robe. The necessary materials are wood, iron bars, cobwebs, and 10 gems. Once that is taken care of, players can don their new robe and set out in search of Tim.

How to Find and Fight Terraria’s Tim

While wearing a robe will increase Tim’s spawn chance, it will not alter the location where he spawns. That area will always be the lower segments of the Cavern layer. As Terraria is a side-scrolling game, each horizontal plane is divided into a distinct layer. The Cavern layer, the largest, is basically the underground portion of the game (minus the Underworld at the very bottom). Tim tends to appear in the lower portions of the Cavern, around where lava starts to appear. Whatever biome is on the surface does not matter, so players can descend to this part of the layer and travel left in right in search of him. For those that have put lots of time into their Terraria world, they have likely already built mine shafts and tunnels for a safe route to this area. For those who are new to Terraria or have started a new world, traveling down to these depths can be a perilous journey. Make sure to bring plenty of torches to light the way, and bring rope and wooden platforms to create an easy trip home.

After some searching, players will eventually come across Tim. Because his spawn chance is still random, though lowered thanks to the magic robe, it may still take a while for him to appear. Consider digging out portions of the lava layer so that they can be more easily traversed, such as converting the cave into a straight-line path. Eventually, when players do encounter Tim, they must be prepared to defeat him. He’s easy to spot when he appears, as he wears a magic robe and wizard hat. His preferred method of combat is to fire 3 balls of magic at the player, and then teleport out of harm’s way. These spheres of magic phase through solid objects, so there’s no hiding from them behind walls, only dodging. This is another reason why carving out a flat area in his spawn region is a good idea, as players will have less tricky terrain to navigate (though the same could be said about most Terraria boss fights). Ranged weapons, such as bows, are always a solid choice for taking down strong enemies, as it lets the player attack safely from a distance, but with Tim, they work better than close-ranged weapons; it’s harder to swing a sword at him while he’s teleporting all over the place.

After the player defeats him for the first time, they’ll receive the There are Some Who Call Him… achievement. Tim will always drop his trademark wizard hat, which can be worn by the player. Doing so will increase the player’s magic attacks by 15%, so those that have found many magic weapons or enjoy playing as a mage will find hunting down Tim for his hat a profitable endeavor.
