Mythical Pokémon in Pokémon Go are obtained as rewards for completing special research tasks or winning an EX Raid. Because of their rarity, mythical Pokémon require a player to walk 20km with them as a buddy to earn one candy. Additionally, it takes 100,000 stardust and 100 candies to unlock a mythical Pokémon’s second charged attack. Furthermore, except for Meltan and Melmetal, no mythical Pokémon can be used to defend a gym.

The mythical Pokémon that may be rewarded for completing a raid are Deoxys, Darkrai, and Genesect in Pokémon Go. Of note, raids are only available for a limited time and cycle frequently. Additionally, the raids featuring mythical Pokémon will be 5-star, and the raids will likely require at least five high-level players or several more lower-level players to win. Once the raid is defeated, the player will still have to successfully catch the Pokémon, which may be difficult as mythical Pokémon have a low catch rate. Furthermore, players only receive a limited number of balls to make the catch. Luckily, players can participate in as many raids as they have passes for, so they have multiple chances to catch the mythical Pokémon and collect as many as they wish. Of note, mythical Pokémon caught this way can be traded between friends as a special trade.

The mythical Pokémon in Pokémon Go that are rewarded for completing special research are Mew, Celebi, Victini, Meloetta, Jirachi, Hoopa, and Meltan. The special research mythical Pokémon earned via rewards cannot be traded, but players will have ample opportunity to catch them as they can use as many balls as they want. Special research tasks can only be completed once, so players will not be able to obtain multiple copies of these Pokémon, unlike in the raid Pokémon.

Mythical Pokémon Research Tasks in Pokémon Go

Most special research tasks will require players to catch various numbers of Pokémon, use berries, hatch eggs, make friends, walk certain distances, battle in gyms, and make certain throws. While most of the tasks will be part of the regular gameplay, some requests may be difficult. For instance, to catch Mew, players will need to complete the special research task “A Mythical Discovery,” which requires players to evolve a Magikarp into Gyarados in Pokémon Go.

Celebi is rewarded for completing “A Ripple in Time,” and players can earn a shiny Celebi by completing the task “Distracted by Something Shiny.” Of note, A Ripple in Time requires players to evolve Eevee into both Espeon and Umbreon, which can be difficult if players do not have sufficient candy. The special research task “Investigate a Mysterious Energy” will reward players with a Victini while Meloetta is rewarded from “The Melody Pokémon.” Notably, to finish Meloetta’s task, players will need to catch 15 different species of Pokémon and earn 5,000 stardust. Additionally, the Mythical Pokémon Jirachi is obtained by completing A Thousand-Year Slumber in Pokémon Go, which requires players to evolve a Feebas and earn the gold Hoenn medal.

Furthermore, “Hoopa’s Arrival” gives players the mythical Pokémon Hoopa, and “Let’s GO,  Meltan” rewards players with a Meltan. “Let’s GO, Meltan” requires players to evolve a Grimer and catch Steel- and Electric-type Pokémon. Of note, Meltan is unique in that it is the only mythical Pokémon that evolves. With enough candies, Meltan will evolve into Melmetal.
