When a person purchases a Roku device and signs up for an account on the streaming service, one of the options available to set up is a four-digit pin. This is an added security feature that can safeguard a user account from unsanctioned purchases or access to content on the platform. But, of course, one of the hassles of enabling a numerical password on a smart TV—especially for users with multiple smart devices that require passwords to unlock certain features—is the possibility of forgetting it entirely. This can cause issues that might make it hard to do things like adding more Roku channels.

There’s the option of not having a Roku pin set up at all, but having one may be crucial in some cases. For example, in a household with young children, having a Roku pin ensures that they don’t accidentally purchase or watch restricted content on The Roku Channel. Having a pin is also helpful for users who like to lend their Roku devices to friends and family. It lets them share their existing entertainment media library while also barring acquaintances from adding more channels, movies, or shows to their Roku account.

Users who have trouble remembering their Roku pin number to add premium Roku channels can access their pin preferences through a web browser. First, go to my.roku.com and sign in to the user account. Then hit the ‘Update’ button under ‘PIN preference.’ Next, put in a new PIN twice to overwrite whatever PIN was previously set.

Setting Up Roku Pin Preferences

While on Roku’s PIN preferences page, consider one of the three available options that will restrict making purchases and adding content on the Roku account. Users can pick ‘Always require a PIN to make purchases and add items from the Channel Store’ if they want to have exclusive rights to modify the contents of the Roku account. If they don’t mind loved ones who occasionally use their Roku device to add free Roku channels, they can pick ‘Always require a PIN to make purchases’ to only block premium content. Finally, select the last option to completely turn the Roku PIN requirement off.

There are a lot of fantastic Roku TV shows to watch, and a lot of them may not be age-appropriate. Users with underage kids can take advantage of the additional parental controls the Roku PIN provides to use The Roku Channel specifically. Parents can restrict content according to age and require the PIN to be entered for content rated for people older than the chosen age restriction. For example, there are options to restrict ‘Little kids’ to content rated G and TV-Y, TV-G. ‘Young kids’ to include additional content rated PG, TV-Y7 and TV-PG, and ‘Teens‘ to include more that’s rated TV-14 and PG-13. Picking any of these three options will require users to enter the Roku PIN to watch content rated R, NC-17, TV-MA, Unrated, and Not Rated within The Roku Channel. It’s important to note that setting up parental controls on the Roku to ‘Off’ will let anyone with access to the account watch any content regardless of age. The Roku pin’s parental controls are also limited to content within The Roku Channel. To restrict content on other streaming services that have channels installed in the Roku account, users will have to go into every app’s settings individually to set up parental controls.

Roku users may run into a situation wherein the Roku pin code they’ve memorized seems to no longer work. Those who run into trouble using their current Roku PIN on their device for whatever reason can simply sign into their Roku account at any time to reset the last PIN. If they’ve never had a Roku PIN enabled before, they can also go to the same page to create a new one.
