As in any survival game, getting resources and building up a base is extremely important in the early hours of Valheim. In Valheim, players take on the role of a battle-slain Viking warrior who has been taken to Valheim, the tenth Norse world. While here, players will need to brave an unforgiving environment, fight monsters, and restore order. After some exploring and taking care of basic needs, players will start to encounter roadblocks to exploration or an increased need for better armor. To get what they need, players will need to unlock and craft a pickaxe.

Getting the pickaxe in Valheim is a bit of a process. Players will need to summon and defeat the first Major Boss of the game, one of Odin’s ancient rivals. They will also need to build and upgrade their Workbench and improve their base. The pickaxe can be used to mine ore that will improve armor, break down rocks that are in the way of exploring and obtain stone material for crafting, and even lower the ground or flatten rougher areas. With so many uses, the pickaxe is one tool players will want to devote time to getting. Here’s how to get a pickaxe in Valheim.

How To Get A Pickaxe In Valheim

There are three major steps to getting a pickaxe in Valheim: Build up character and base strength, obtain Deer Trophies, and summon and defeat Eikthyr. First, players will want to continue building up their base, leveling up their skills, building new weapons, and especially, building their Workbench. This will help improve their skills and strength, which will be required to take on the Major Boss Eikthyr, who they have to summon to get materials for the pickaxe.

They will also need the Workbench upgraded to at least Level 2 or Level 3 to be able to craft a good pickaxe, so players should also focus on this prior to or right after fighting Eikthyr. Players will need to find Flint and build a Chopping Block. When players place the Chopping Block next to the Workbench, it will upgrade the Workbench to Level 2.

Players will particularly need to craft a good bow. This can be a useful weapon, but it is also the best way to hunt deer in Valheim. Players will need to hunt deer for Deer Trophies, which are the offerings used to summon Eikthyr. They will need to place two of these on the Summoning Stone. Players can summon this giant, lightning-wielding deer as many times as they want, but they will usually find it best to wait until they have established a base and a farm and built up their strength first.

Players should have no trouble fighting the first Major Boss with a shield and a knife or bow. After defeating Eikthyr, the creature will gift the player several Hard Antlers, the material needed to craft the Antler Pickaxe at the Workbench. The pickaxe will cost 1 Hard Antler and 10 Wood, so players can either make an extra pickaxe or store the remaining Hard Antlers for later use.
