The genius of How to Get Away With Murder comes into its own in its third season, released in 2016. Annalise’s advanced course on Criminal Law is rigorous, but student demand remains extremely high. Unfortunately, someone is trying to besmirch her name by spreading pamphlets about her allegedly murderous activities.

The story goes on to explore the events leading to Wes’ murder, while the remaining Keating minions struggle to deal with Annalise being thrown in jail. Here is a list of the ten best episodes in Season 3 (as per their respective scores on IMDb.)

10 There Are Worse Things Than Murder (Episode 2) – 8.3

Annalise trashes the only source of contact between her and Frank, a burner phone, while he fakes a car explosion to hide his latest kill. The Keating clinic attempts to free Irene Crawley, a woman who takes the law into her own hands and kills her nasty abusive husband (and is punished for it by having to spend three decades in prison.)

Asher cannot handle the fact the Michaela only wants him for sexual pleasure, as he realizes his feelings for her. Middleton University plans to suspend Annalise Keating to distance themselves from the rumors surrounding her.

9 We’re Bad People (Episode 10) – 8.3

In this episode, Laurel develops severe PTSD upon finding that it was Wes who died in the Keating mansion fire (for which she is placed under hospital care.) Connor insists that Laurel abort her baby with Wes, but is beaten up by Asher for his insensitive remarks.

Bonnie and Annalise identify the likely source behind the latter’s slandering — Sam’s sister, Hannah Keating. Although they are certain about having bail granted to Annalise, the last-minute introduction of new evidence is enough for the judge to deny it.

8 We’re Good People Now (Episode 1) – 8.4

However, when he later reveals his act of deleting Connor’s Stanford letter to his partner, he does not receive the righteous rage he expects (and therefore dumps him.) Frank has vanished after Annalise kicks him out, and he clearly doesn’t want to return to her either, as seen when he murders a P.I. she sends after him.

7 Call It Mother’s Intuition (Episode 7) – 8.4

Oliver struggles under the weight of his HIV+ diagnosis and is certain that nobody would love him if he reveals his status to them. This is proven when one of his potential dates refuses to meet with him, but Connor is waiting with open arms when Oliver runs home to him.

Frank finally finds a way to see Bonnie, who is angry that he abandoned her without a word (as well as for going to meet Laurel before her.) In the flashforward, Annalise is shown receiving two official criminal charges: first-degree homicide and arson.

6 Don’t Tell Annalise (Episode 4) – 8.5

Annalise learns that her practicing license is under suspension, so she accepts to enter a rehab program to help her stop drinking. She and Nate get into a serious altercation, and he ends up having sex with ADA Atwood as revenge.

Frank thinks he’s doing something nice for Bonnie when he murders her father in jail, but she doesn’t react as she would rather not have Annalise know that she knew where Frank was the whole time. In the future, an imprisoned Annalise learns of a gruesome discovery in her burned-out home.

5 It’s War (Episode 13) – 8.6

Once he learns that Wes was killed in the fire, he greatly regrets not doing anything when he saw the kid skulking about the mansion the same night he died. Oliver confronts the possibility that Connor might be involved in his friend’s death when he discovers that his boyfriend was in the area at approximately the right time.

ADA Atwood shows her true colors — everyone learns that she was involved in the secret cremation of Wes’ body, a fact that would ensure her successful framing of Annalise and Nate.

4 No More Blood (Episode 8) – 8.7

Through Frank, Annalise finds the best possible alibi for the Charles Mahoney case, but the answer she receives reactivates the trauma of losing her baby. Oliver and Connor fight for the thousandth time, but this time the former suggests that the latter might be “emotionally damaged,” which only makes everything worse between the couple.

A horrifying spectacle occurs at the Keating residence: Frank threatens to commit suicide as penance for his sins (with Bonnie trying to stop him and Annalise goading him on.)

3 He Made A Terrible Mistake (Episode 14) – 8.9

At long last, Connor Walsh comes clean about his role in the Wes fiasco, confessing that he tried to save him by administering CPR. He even agrees to officially take the stand on the matter, but as his admission might shift the guilt onto him, Annalise decides to have Laurel do it instead.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t go as planned, as Laurel’s “perjurous” past comes back to haunt her. This episode is clearly Connor-centric, as it is he who finds out about the illegal plotting between Todd Denver and Renee Atwood.

2 Wes (Episode 15) – 8.9

The season closes with a spectacular bang: ADA Denver blackmails Connor by thrusting an “immunity deal” on him, but it’s inevitable expiry forces the terrified kid into providing evidence against Annalise.

In order to save Frank and herself, Annalise chooses to blame the murders of Sam and Rebecca on Wes, a ploy that works mainly because she’s the one who comes up with it. A flashback, however, reveals that Wes actually agreed to being charged with the two deaths, but is himself killed before he can act on it.

1 Who’s Dead? (Episode 9) – 9.5

Bonnie refuses to keep her relationship with Frank a secret and tells Annalise (perhaps to soften her anger towards him.) Wes is told about Rebecca’s corpse appearing in the surrounding woods, and the law tries to convince him to turn against his own mentor.

Annalise’s alcoholism has returned with greater force, which is why she forgets to shut her main door before going over to meet Bonnie. Wes’ charred body is shown to Nate, who deems it as final proof that the former will never be returning to the show again (at least not as himself.)
