Fans of RPGs will already know how important companions are to a well-rounded party and a complex narrative. Companions offer aid during major fights, new skills that can bolster the party, and interesting loyalty quests for players to pursue. They also often stay with a player long after the credits roll. In Baldur’s Gate 3, which takes place in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, the player character has been taken captive and infected by a Mind Flayer tadpole parasite and must find a way to remove it before they are transformed into Mind Flayers. When the ship the player has been taken captive on is attacked by Githyanki warriors, and the player is freed in the chaos. They take control of and subsequently crash the ship. The companions players encounter in the game are also survivors of the same crash.

There are five companions for players to meet during Act One of the game and recruit into the party. These companions come from different races and classes. They also have their own unique personalities, philosophies, likes, and dislikes, and some will not get along with each other. In fact, it seems the only shared interest that really holds the group together is their shared interest in removing the Mind Flayer tadpoles from their heads. But, as in most RPGs, the player and their companions will need to put aside any differences if they are to survive. Here’s where to find every companion in Baldur’s Gate 3 early access and recruit them into the party.

How to Get Every Companion in Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access

The five companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be recruited fairly early in the game as players explore the wreckage of the ship and surrounding areas. In the early access version of the game, the player’s companions are Shadowheart, a High Half-Elf Cleric; Astarion, a High Elf Vampire Rogue; Gale, a Human Wizard; Lae’zel, a Githyanki Fighter; and Wyll, a Human noble Warlock. All five are romanceable for the player character at some point in the game as well. Here’s how to recruit them all.

  • Shadowheart: Available shortly after waking up on the beach. Players will find her attempting to break into the Abandoned Ruins.
  • Astarion: Found hiding from a monster on a hill past the Nautiloid ship’s wreckage. Help him defeat the monster he’s hiding from, and he will agree to tag along.
  • Gale: Found next to the Roadside Cliffs fast travel point, above the Nautiloid wreckage.
  • Lae’zel: Players meet Lae’zel briefly on the Nautiloid. Later, they will find her trapped in a cage by the Cathedral Ruins and must decide whether to help her escape. If the player helps, she will join the party.
  • Wyll: Found in the camp after the fight outside Druid’s Grove. He will be teaching one of the Tieflings to fight.

It is likely players will be able to meet and recruit more companions once the full version of the game is released.
